The 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival will focus on independent Iranian cinema this year, with a selection of recent works by directors working outside the Tehran regime.
The nine features, all made in the past four years, and most from young directors at the start of their careers, “offer an insightful testimony of the burning creativity of Iran’s artists in the face of their challenging reality,” the festival said in a statement, calling the films examples of “urgent, unheard, voices who palpably bear a spiritual connection to the previous generations of their country’s greats [and who] tackle the current reality [in Iran] with a remarkable sensitivity and great inventiveness.”
The selection includes two features from this year: Negin Ahmadi’s Dream’s Gate and Zapata from director Danesh Eqbashavi; two from 2022: Nader Saeivar’s No End and The Locust, directed by Faeze Azizkhani; Bahram Ark’s The Skin and Vahid Vakilifar’s K9,...

The 57th edition of Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival, which runs June 30-July 8, has planned a retrospective program focused on Iranian cinema with a selection of films made in the past four years. The festival will also celebrate the work of Japanese filmmaker Yasuzo Masumura.

Filming continues apace on the Gosport set of Doctor Who season 11, and UK tabloid The Mirror (h/t Daily Express) has relayed some new photos to prove it.
Embedded below, the gallery sees Jodie Whittaker signing autographs for a number of curious Whovians eager to get up close and personal with their new Time Lord. She’s really taken to the role, too, particularly after her blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance during Doctor Who‘s festive treat, “Twice Upon a Time.”
It’s also laid the foundations for a truly unmissable season, and at least based on The Mirror’s findings, Doctor Who‘s next installment will welcome the return of an old friend: K9, the beloved metal pooch best known for its recurring role on The Sarah Jane Adventures. Word is Doctor Who companion Bradley Walsh was spotted next to the canine (along with a Dalek), which tells us that his...

The Doctor’s robotic canine companion is getting a cinematic outing, dubbed K9: Timequake...
There’s always talk of more spin-offs or cinematic releases for Doctor Who, but here’s one we weren’t expecting – K9 is getting his own movie. According to K9’s Facebook page, he’ll reach cinema screens in 2017 with a film called K9: Timequake.
The Doctor’s robotic canine companion first appeared in 1977 serial The Invisible Enemy. He made his Nu-Who return alongside Elisabeth Sladen’s Sarah Jane Smith in 2006’s School Reunion before spinning out with her into The Sarah Jane Adventures.
After that, K9 spun out once more into an Australian children’s show called K9. For legal reasons, that show couldn’t reference The Doctor or other Doctor Who characters. The film, however, will feature the classic Who baddie Omega. It’s unclear if the film will...

From ampersands to The Apprentice, from dinner ladies to Dirty Den, here's a selection of nerdy in-jokes from Doctor Who series 2...
Last month we took a look at Doctor Who Series One as it celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Specifically, we delved deep into the murky world of in-jokes and sweet nerdy references.
Let’s take another trip back in time and have a look at the more notable and interesting references and in-jokes from Doctor Who Series Two, starring David Tennant and Billie Piper, where the credit of “Doctor Who” had been changed back to “The Doctor”. Pfft, party poopers.
New Earth
Old-skool fans would have been forgiven for being excited at the prospect, given that “New Earth” was a planet mentioned in the 1974 classic Invasion Of The Dinosaurs (though it didn’t actually exist in that story, it was a fake world). But all fans could get excited at...

Prolific screenwriter Everett De Roche, who died in Melbourne yesterday, was one of the instigators of the Ozploitation genre movement of the 1970s and 80s.
The Us-born writer, who migrated to Australia with his wife in 1968, was 67. He had battled with cancer for three years. He started as an in-house writer for Crawfords for four years in the 1970s, penning episodes of Homicide, Division 4, Ryan and Matlock Police.
His first feature screenplay was Colin Eggleston.s Long Weekend in 1978. Among his film credits were Richard Franklin.s Patrick (1978), Simon Wincer.s Harlequin (1980), Franklin.s Roadgames (1981), David Hemmings. Race to the Yankee Zephyr (1981), Russell Mulcahy.s Razorback (1984) and Franklin.s Visitors (2003).
In 2008 he and director Jamie Blanks collaborated on a remake of Long Weekend, for which he added two characters, a baby dugong and several scenes. "The basic environmental message works as well today as it did in 1978," he said.

Shane Krause has a refreshingly candid view of the commercial prospects of The Contents, a self-funded supernatural thriller which marks his directing debut.
.If the film turns out to be any good we will get interest. from distributors and sales agents, says Krause, who co-wrote and produced the film with his regular collaborator Shayne Armstrong.
.If it doesn.t it will die the death it deserves to. The amount of money at risk is pitifully small. If it doesn.t work no one gets hurt..
The cast and a small crew worked irregularly on the film for the past six months shooting on locations in Brisbane. It.s 80% completed; still to come are the visual effects elements created by Steve Boyle whose credits include The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Bait 3D, Daybreakers and who.s just worked on Chris Sun.s low budget horror film Charlie.s Farm.

Well, my Big Finish monthly mega-review was well-received, so when I review the July titles, it will be in one big group. In the meantime, here’s the reviews of of the two remaining June Who audios!
The Dalek Contract
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
‘These creatures have ravaged half the cosmos. They’re experts at this kind of thing. Nothing can stand in their way.’
The Doctor and Romana find themselves in the Proxima System, where enigmatic Conglomerate CEO Cuthbert has been conducting his infamous ‘experiment’. An experiment which might accidentally rip the universe apart.
Meanwhile, living conditions on Proxima Major have become harsh and hostile. Climate change has turned the landscape into a freezing wasteland and an alien power has condemned much of the population to life inside internment camps. For those still clinging to their freedom, the struggle for survival is now beyond desperate and outsiders such as...

The Hunter was one of this writer’s favourite films of last year- at once thrilling and heartbreaking, mysterious and involving, it tells the tale of Willem Dafoe’s silent hunter, hired by a shady corporation to attempt to track down the legendary Tasmanian Tiger, thought to be extinct for years. But once he starts to get involved with the family whose house he is living in, and gets on the wrong side of the aggressive townspeople, things start to go terribly wrong. It is a well-acted, well-paced, poetic and original film of which we see little these days. I suggest you seek it out. Another factor to praise it for is its direction, and that is entirely down to Daniel Nettheim.
Having previously directed the likes of romantic comedy Angst and family dramas like K9 and Dance Academy, Daniel was able to realise what had been a long-brewing passion...

Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor, Mary Tamm as Romana, John Leeson as K-9 and Alice “The Borg Queen” Kirge as a submarine captain. What could possibly go wrong?
As you gathered from that set up, I wasn’t overly impressed with this story. It starts with the Doctor and company arriving in the Marianas Trench. No sooner have they figured out where and when (the 2040s) they are, when the Tardis is picked up by a submarine and brought inside.
Turns out the sub is a special deep sea exploration vessel that my mind kept wanting to call SeaQuest. As they probe around under the water, they spot a group of intelligent squid who try to warn them away. Does the sub crew say, “Hey, great idea. These squid can’t have an agenda against us. Let’s make for the surface?” No, of course they don’t. Soon...

Here we have story two of season two of The Fourth Doctor Adventures. It’s a good, solid story, but it’s also part one of at least two, and that makes it ever so hard to review. On the other hand, we have Tom Baker, Mary Tamm, John Leeson and David Warner, so at the very least, we know at the outset that we’re going to get something pretty amazing!
Our story starts off in the future of Earth, with the Doctor (Baker), Romana (Tamm) and K9 (Leeson) arriving at about the same time as several billion alien life forms, rather like space manatees, show up. This happens at the same time as a new Earth president (Haley Atwell) is taking office.
Romana and the Doctor are soon captured, of course, and blamed for the apparent invasion; something that at least seems plausible given...

Broadcasters, take heed. Science-fiction is no longer just the domain of socially-inept teenage boys and overgrown fans of Dungeons and Dragons. With shows like The Walking Dead attracting viewers in their millions and HBO developing a series based on Neil Gaiman's best-selling fantasy American Gods, it has never been more acceptable to prefer your entertainment with a touch of nerdiness.
As a television genre, sci-fi has a long history. The grandfather of all American science-fiction programming is Star Trek, while the United Kingdom has spent almost half a century watching the adventures of everyone's favourite timelord in Doctor Who. But try naming a similarly iconic Australian TV series and you'll find yourself struggling.

Ah, the Doctor’s companions. No matter who they are, they exist to allow the Doctor to have someone to exposit to and keep him company on his adventures. There’s been about forty of them, mostly attractive women, and they’ve been everything from a Scots highlander to a 51st century time traveler, to a Time Lady, to a robot dog.
Now before we get into this list we have to define what makes for a companion. There’s several possible definitions, but I’ll be adopting the incredibly subjective definition of “they’re a companion because I say they are”. I have the vague guideline that they have to have stared in more than one story, and not get written out in their second story. Traveling with the Doctor in the Tardis is a nice bonus, but not required. Thus I include potential top 10 companions like the Brigadier,...

In the service of the launch of the excellent Doctor Who audio spin-off The Minister Of Chance (check back here for a review on the 17th of March), the seventh Doctor himself, Sylvester McCoy, was kind enough to have a chat with us today, which will be up on the site very shortly. The Scottish actor also talked at some length about his pending role as the wizard Radagast in Peter Jackson's much-delayed New Zealand production of The Hobbit - and clears up fairly definitively whether the character is just making a brief cameo, referring to his involvement in 'two films' for the project and responding to a question about the duration of his stay down under with:
Oh, six to eight weeks, the first time, and then I've got to go back another three or four times over the next three years.

Nothing. What’s all that about? What do we mean when we define the word Nothing? Maybe Nothing could refer to the most pointless show on TV, The One Show, an inane vacuum of dull reports and vacuous donkey-faced presenters. Or maybe it refers to the contents of my brain first thing in the morning. Or any time for that matter.
It’s also the destination of the E-Space final chapter, Warriors’ Gate, an enigmatic tale that finally frees the Doctor from the constraints of the Exo-Space continuum, and sadly bidding adieu to both Romana and K9. It’s an odd tale, which relies more on visual set-pieces rather than a straightforward, coherent story. But somehow it all comes together to form one of the best stories of the season.
Ambiguous though it may be, Warriors’ Gate’s main plot is a simple one. A ragtag bunch of disgruntled workers...

Narcissist that I am, I sometimes go back to read my past reviews on the Shadowlocked website. I was just checking out the one for The Big Bang, in which I was foolishly attempting to make out that I'd found the ability to travel back in time to meet my five-year-old-self.
As you do.
Anyway, the ham-fisted point that I was trying to make was that Doctor Who is chiefly for kids. Although it enjoys a sizeable adult following, kids especially love Who. What's great about this is that they take it at face value, ignore the shortcomings and get caught up in the different fantasy worlds, scenarios and monsters. A good example of this approach is season 17 adventure The Creature From The Pit.
The difference between adults' reactions and kids' reactions to Pit is bigger than Mick Jagger's gob. To a child, Pit is an atmospheric fantasy adventure...

The Armageddon Factor. Hmmphh. Sounds a bit like a cross between Gladiators and The X Factor in which Simon Cowell, Many Faces Of Louis Walsh, a Minogue Sister and People’s Pop Princess Cheryl Cole decide which bicep-bulging goons go head to head in mortal combat. In fact, it turns out to be both an orchestrated war between the planets of Zeos and Atrios.
Oh, and more crucially, it’s the last instalment in the Key To Time saga.
The past 26 weeks have boasted some of the best examples of late 1970s Who - witty snowbound Hustle prototype The Ribos Operation, explosion in imagination factory The Pirate Planet and summery Zenda update The Androids Of Tara. One of the good things about the season is that the linking theme isn’t always crowbarred in at inopportune moments. That’s the great thing about the quest motif - you simply start...

Must try harder. I’ve never liked that phrase. It’s a quasi-patronising way of saying that you’ve fallen from grace. School grades. Exams. Even the results of the World Cup 2010 - yeah, Capello, you and your team should have tried harder.
And then there’s poor Robert Holmes, and in particular, The Power Of Kroll, the Key To Time’s giant monster tale, in which the good Doctor gets caught in the crossfire between a group of gormless nutbars spray-painted green and a small choir of shouting angry men. Unfortunately, The Power Of Kroll has had something of a bad press. Well, not even interesting enough to be called bad - just lukewarm.
The root of all this is Robert Holmes’ track record, which in the 1970s, was as good as it gets. Talons Of Weng-Chiang. Deadly Assassin. Ribos Operation. Strikes don’t get much higher than that,...
