Warning: Spoilers
Masters and a patrol have ridden into Salt River for supplies and are told three outlaws have also come to the town: The Fargo Kid, Johnny Roy, and Black Jack Ketchum. While they are wanted, they aren't wanted in this territory so the Marshal can't arrest them.

Rusty takes a poster of Stacey Chance then heads off to the general store for some soda pop. The three outlaws are there playing cards and Rusty is watching. But he accidentally discovers Black Jack was cheating. Black Jack hits Rusty and Rinty attacks. Black Jack manages to get his gun and is about to shoot Rinty when his gun is shot out of his hand; Stacey Chance has arrived. Black Jack explains the dog went after him, but Chance says he saw what happened. He says Black Jack was luckily it was the dog who went after him, because he (Chance) would have. Rusty is grateful and impressed.

Turns out Masters and Chance grew up together. Chance says Masters is lucky to have Rinty and Rusty in his outfit.

Later, outside of town Chance shoots a military courier for his dispatch bag. What was in there was the message Chance and the other outlaws were waiting for. Masters tries talking to Rusty who has a bad case of hero worship mistaking Chance for Robin Hood. Masters tries to convince Rusty that Chance was no good, but to no avail. Rinty finds the body of the dead trooper. Turns out a million dollars in gold is to pass through the territory, and the dispatch had the orders for Masters and the troopers about guarding the gold. Boone believes Chance killed the trooper and took the dispatch. Masters orders are to arrest Chance, but Rusty overhears and goes back to town to warn Chance who he believes is a good guy.

Chance is told Rusty is looking for him. Rusty tells Chance that Masters is coming to get him. Chance says he's innocent, he just needs to prove it. Maybe he and Rusty can capture the other three outlaws at Apache Gap. While Rusty waits, Chance tells the boys to get their tools and dynamite and head for Apache Pass. A bit later, Chance is there with Rusty. He tells Rusty to stay put while he looks around.

Masters and the troopers come to Salt River only to find their quarry is gone. Chance tells Rusty he has a plan. He will pretend to throw in with the outlaws and then he and Rusty can catch them red handed. Masters has learned Rusty was in town and no doubt warned Chance. Masters finds a map of Apache Pass and figures that's where the outlaws plan to attack to get the gold. Rinty has Rusty's scent and Masters and the troopers head out to catch the outlaws.

The trap is being set by Chance and the rest. Rusty still thinks Chance is going to help by firing a warning shot. But when the bullet strikes the dynamite and kills a trooper, Rusty realizes he's been a fool. Then he sees Chance and the others kill all the troopers. Masters arrives too late, Chance and the gold along with Rusty and the outlaws are long gone.

Chance has just told Rusty to stop looking back; he will never see Masters again. Chance doesn't know Rinty. Chance finds out that Masters is right behind him. He has a plan: he tells Masters to back off or never see Rusty again. Boone is angry; they can't do anything. But Rinty takes off. Masters tells the men to follow Rinty quiet as they can and be prepared.

Chance tells the outlaws to remain behind to slow down the troopers. He will take the gold laden mules to Juarez, Mexico where the three can meet him later. The outlaws agree. Masters using his binoculars sees Chance and the gold moving off; and then Rinty makes his move and takes down Chance. The troopers advance and take the other three in an attack.

Masters arrives and has Rusty order Rinty to go down. Masters says he should have left Rinty go full at Chance; but no, this is Master's opportunity. He hands Chance back his gun and tells him to draw. Chance says no; it would be murder as Rip was always faster. Rusty leans a lesson about misplaced hero worship.
