"This program reveals the horror of slavery through the eyes of two women - one, Maria Nugent, an island governor's wife and slave owner and the other, Mary Prince, a slave. Actors use words of the real characters to tell their stories. Living in Jamaica, Nugent seems a naive figure, steeped in the upper-class English attitudes that condoned slavery as a natural condition. Prince tells a very different tale, of being handed from owner to owner since childhood and being subjected to abominable cruelty - beatings, rapes and other unspeakable indignities. Mary's dictated stories published by the London Anti-Slavery League, encourages hundreds of English women to speak out against the abomination, and in 1834, England finally bans the practice".
