Mr. Howell and Miss Wentworth
kevinolzak18 June 2016
"Mr. and Mrs. ???" is a torturous title for this episode, opening with a radio announcement that Reverend Buckley Norris, the man who conducted the Howells' wedding, has been exposed as a fraud, right after extolling the virtues of wedded bliss to steward Gilligan. The Skipper is all ready to perform the ceremony, on a raft in the middle of the lagoon, with Gilligan happy to be the best man at something (Skipper: "you couldn't be best man at an all girls school!"). The bride's stubbornness proves to be too much for the groom, who proceeds to call off the wedding. The solution is a party where both sides try to make the other jealous. The conclusion is a real cop out, but quite understandable.

DO YOU WANT TO GET RE-MARRIED OR NOT????
tcchelsey3 September 2023
As I have written before, both good and bad news ALWAYS comes through that famous long white radio the castaways so readily rely on.

Today's bulletin: Mr. And Mrs. Howell were married by a con man, a phony baloney.... so they are not legally married! Now what?

Veteran Gary Nelson directed this fun episode with his usual flair as its complete panic for everyone! Nelson at the time was also writing for PATTY DUKE, and long a writer for GET SMART.

Usually in the series, there are few if any logical escape clauses for the castaway's problems. HOWEVER, in this case the Skipper (legally!) can marry Mr. And Mrs. Howell. Best scene has got to be the proposed wedding ceremony, where the bickering, depressed couple are supposed to be re-married on a floating raft in the middle of the lagoon!

Mrs. Howell abruptly walks out and comes the wild plan to make bride and groom jealous of each other. Can you believe Mr. Howell flirting with Ginger or Mrs. Howell flirting with the guys?

You can believe it. And again, you can tell the cast is having a blast.

The age old question. Where did Mr. And Mrs. Howell get their fancy wardrobe??? Hmmm...

And to note, Mr. Howell's five dollar cigar would be worth over 40 bucks in 2023! Now that's a pricey smoke!

Recommended fluff and with some very good dialogue. From SEASON2 EPISODE 31 remastered dvd box set.

Gilligan singles out the Howells.
Ralphkram29 May 2018
Basically a companion piece to Agonized Labor, this entry is standard, has no real stand out moments, and is made up of the same material we've seen before and will unfortunately see again. Misinformation about the Howells fuels the slim plot. At least this time they learn of their predicament in the open to get things off to a quicker start, but most of the episode is predictable, and the resolution is just as tired and lazy as the earlier outing.

The couple is stunned to learn that the good reverend who married them is an imposter and they're not legally wed. Going to the extreme, Mrs. Howell boots her husband out of their hut and goes back to using her maiden name of Wentworth. He moves into the sailor's hut and-just like in Goodbye, Old Paint-Gilligan and the Skip wind up on the jungle floor. Even though she now has the hut to herself, she moves in with the girls, purely to irritate them enough so they will devise a plan to get them to remarry.

Ginger proposes that the Skip preside over their ceremony. The Professor argues that he has no authority on dry land, so Gilligan suggests they build a little raft and move the wedding out into the lagoon. First, there is a bit of padding with a dry run involving our confirmed bachelor and Mary Ann, his one-time love interest, which ends in a pratfall that foreshadows the main event. The actual ceremony is more tired bickering; the writers even dust off that ancient bit where the ring gets stuck on the best man's finger. It ends with Mr. Howell taking the plunge in a way he didn't expect.

We cover more familiar ground as the castaways scheme yet again to bring the Howells back together. Ginger's plan this time is to make them jealous by having them 'date' other people. She pairs with Mr. Howell at a table right next to the Professor and Mrs. Howell, and the couples pitch romance. The Ginger-Howell pairing is surprisingly a big yawn, but the Professor-Howell team up is promising and has some clever lines.

Ginger's scheme fails, though, so the Skip turns to the equally unoriginal and dumb plan of dressing up like a headhunter to scare them. The scheme is successful because Mr. Howell is uncharacteristically brave in protecting his wife from a tubby, middle-aged savage who looks like a ship's captain with bad make-up.

The resolution is just a slight variation on the ending of Agonized Labor, where a dumb error by the radio announcer is allowed to go on uncorrected for days, so the Howells went through hoops for nothing.

COCONOTES:

Gilligan reveals that he isn't married because he is afraid of girls. He's certainly nervous around them, but afraid? In the Matchmaker he was perfectly willing to be in a relationship with Mary Ann.

He also doesn't think couples should show PDA's. Poor Mary Ann.

Gilligan wears yet another steward outfit. He must've got it from the same place where Mary Ann got her suspenders.

Love Mr. Howell's line to his beloved teddy bear when his wife mentions dividing their possessions.

"Salicylic acid. That's aspirin."
