The Night Manager is one of the most loved British series. The spy thriller is based on John le Carre’s 1993 novel of the same name. The series stars Hugh Laurie as Richard Onslow Roper (Dicky), Tom Hiddleston as Jonathan Pine, Olivia Colman as Angela Burr, Tom Hollander as Major Lance, Elizabeth Debicki as Jemima and others. The series aired in 2016 and received positive reviews.
In The Night Manager, both Tom and Hugh gave exceptional performances. The Loki actor played the spy with such perfection that no one can imagine anyone else as Jonathan Pine. But did you know, that Hugh Laurie once revealed that he wanted to play Tom’s character? Yes, Hugh loved the novel in the 90s itself and wanted to adapt it into a show. However, that didn’t happen until Sussane Beir decided to adapt the book in 2016.

Disney+ finally confirmed the streaming release date for the 2023 animated movie Wish, which will break a frustrating record for the studio.
The House of Mouse's centenary celebration arrived in theaters on November 22, but it has yet to make its debut on Disney+. Most initial predictions had Wish coming to streaming in late February, around three months after debuting on the big screen akin to most other major Disney releases.
But that never came to pass, and Wish has since been left off the monthly Disney+ release calendars for the first three months of 2024.

When I first saw the title of this, I naturally thought of the song by the same name that became a huge if not ‘Monster Hit’ for Bobby “Boris” Pickett at the height of the fifties and sixties monster craze. The picture takes the theme of sixties creature features and creates a bloody at times gore-filled Anthology of stories to shock, offend and make you go ‘ok’.
The Monster Mash (2022) directed by Kevin Losani and Richard Terrasi succeeds admirably with engaging pulp-like stories whose endings you can see a mile or kilometre off depending on your country. The difference is the work is so lovingly done, with fun, practical effects, at times over-the-top acting that fits and just a little tinge of naughty offence.
The film opens with outstanding titles harkening back to Saturday morning horror cartoons that were never quite frightening. An on-camera host Dr Freudstein (Michael Gentile) and his not-so-able hunchbacked,...

In a planned response to a volatile videogame market, Warner Bros has talked about a Harry Potter live-service game where players can spend every waking moment.
Imagine being able to conduct a business meeting from beneath the flickering candles of Hogwarts Castle. Imagine socialising with friends alongside a digital Hagrid or Dobby the House Elf. Imagine being able to immerse yourself in a digital Wizarding World, and never having to face dreary, analogue reality ever again.
Taken at face value, this is roughly the grand vision that Jb Perette, Warner Bros Discovery’s CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games, has for his company’s approach to videogames.
It has, as you may have noticed, been a turbulent time for the games industry. People are losing their jobs all over the place, studios are closing, and while Warner Bros has enjoyed some massive hits – Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling...

Any business, no matter how big, sails or sinks by the grace of its customers. Be it Disney or Starbucks, regardless of the product that is produced, the company’s priority needs to be to cater to the audiences that have supported them throughout. According to podcaster Patrick Bet-David, this is where Disney messed up, leading to the financial mess that has been the last few years for the House of Mouse.
Disney CEO Bob Iger
Elon Musk has come out to agree with Bet-David’s assessment, detailing what Disney forgot to do. The one thing that drives businesses is that it cater to the audience that has supported it throughout its lifetime: parents. The assessment came as a tweet, linking a sit down that the podcaster had with Gina Carano, discussing her ordeal with Disney that led to her being removed from The Mandalorian.

So the book today is all kinds of things – source of an animated romantic comedy , compared to Seinfeld, a new 2023 collection of the work of the cartoonist behind Wrinkles and The House . What it isn’t, though, is a single thing.
Memoirs of a Man in Pajamas doesn’t explain itself. But it collects Paco Roca comics in three sections and has three copyright dates – 2011, 2014, 2017 – which three sections are somewhat different in style and format and concerns. And it says, here and there, that these comics originally appeared in Spanish publications, I think always weekly, at those times.
I’ll note, here, that all of the reviews I’ve seen of it focus most tightly on that first section, making me wonder if Publishers Weekly and all the rest only flipped through the back half of the book.
The strips here feature a cartoonist, happy with his life as he...

“The Godfather of Gore” Lucio Fulci worked across all genres, but it’s his horror output that’s most remembered thanks to his knack for visceral violence, gore, and unconventional storytelling. All of these are on prominent display in his Lovecraftian “Gates of Hell” trilogy that began with 1980’s City of the Living Dead. While its atmosphere and gross-out gore gags are the standout reasons to watch, City of the Living Dead also happens to make for a stellar Halloween hidden gem.
The premise is simple: a priest commits suicide in a Dunwich village cemetery and unwittingly opens the gate to Hell. The death is observed in visions by a medium, Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl), as she’s conducting a séance in her New York apartment. Mary’s so overwhelmed by fear of the imminent evil encroaching that she collapses and is presumed dead, only to be rescued from her...

‘Leave the World Behind’ Review: Sam Esmail’s Apocalyptic Drama Is Taut, Terrifying and All Too Real
Apocalyptic thrillers are a dime a dozen these days. This year alone M. Night Shyamalan released his own take on the genre — also adapted from a popular novel — with this year’s “Knock at the Cabin.” But watching director/producer/screenwriter Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind” makes Shyamalan’s film feel quaint by comparison, with the “Mr. Robot” creator telling a two-hour descent into chaos that is compelling and utterly terrifying.
Based on the novel by Rumaan Alam, the film follows Amanda and Clay (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke), a couple who decide on a whim to leave their New York home with their two children and go on a weekend vacation to the small “hamlet” of Point Comfort in Long Island. But things go south when the owner of the house they’ve rented, a man known as G.H. Scott (Mahershala Ali), arrives with his daughter.

This is a 2004 graphic novel – should I say bande dessinée? Roca is Spanish, but my sense is the term is used generally across Europe – that the creator’s afterword notes was tweaked a bit for subsequent publications, finalized in 2009. This English translation – which Roca might have kibitzed on, as his afterword talks a lot about kibitzing on the French and Spanish and other editions in the first years – was done by Jeff Whitman for a 2017 American publication.
So it’s older that it might look, but maybe not entirely so. The original work is about two decades ago now, but I’m not sure Roca didn’t touch it, one last time, before this edition.
The Lighthouse is one of Paco Roca’s earliest works, I think, but that picture is muddy. He’s been translated out of sequence here in North America, with The House from 2005 only arriving in...

The 31st edition of London’s Raindance Film Festival will open with the U.K. premiere of British actor Jack Huston’s directorial debut “Day of the Fight.”
The film comes to Raindance fresh off its Venice debut, where Huston was honored by Variety as a breakthrough director.
The story of a once-renowned boxer who takes a redemptive journey through his past and present on the day of his first fight since he left prison stars Michael Pitt alongside a cast including Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci, and a cameo from Steve Buscemi.
The U.K. premiere of Isabel Coixet’s “Un Amor” will close the festival after it bows at San Sebastian. Based on Sara Mesa’s bestselling novel, Laia Costa plays a young woman who escapes her stressful life in the city and relocates to rural Spain. When she accepts a disturbing sexual proposal, it gives rise to an all-consuming and obsessive passion.

The current carriage dispute between Disney and Spectrum has even drowned out the discourse about the writer/actor strike in Hollywood. That’s certainly understandable, given that the second-largest cable provider in the country has no way to offer users channels like the Disney Channel, ESPN, Freeform, FX, and more — at least for the present.
The timing of the dispute surprised many observers, but those within the industry have seen the likelihood of such disputes grow as streaming ascends and cable recedes. Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish was asked to give his thoughts on the disagreement between Disney and Spectrum at the Goldman Sachs Communicopia and Technology conference last week. He said the dispute was “not a surprise.”

Since launching in 2020, Cauldron Films has quickly established itself as a boutique label to watch for cult film fans. In addition to unearthing and restoring obscurities like The Crimes of the Black Cat, American Rickshaw, and Frankenstein ’80, they’ve secured a few heavy hitters. Their most recognizable title to date is Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (originally released in the US as The Gates of Hell). Following an exclusive slipcase edition last year, a standard retail version of the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray set is available this week.
The 1980 Italian horror film is significant for kicking off Fulci’s thematically connected Gates of Hell trilogy, followed by The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery the next year. Developed in the wake of Fulci’s success with Zombie in 1979, City of the Living Dead features more undead ghouls but this time as accoutrements rather than a centerpiece.

Whether or not you believe in life after death, there’s no denying that there’s entertainment to be found in the exploration of the unknown. That’s why I appreciate the extreme popularity of ghost hunting shows despite being a life-long skeptic and understanding that most of these programs greatly exaggerate their findings in the pursuit of ratings.
However, not all paranormal investigators are created equal, with some of them actually having a minimum of respect for the scientific method and operating on a series of rational principles instead of simply reacting to make-believe noises and looking scared for the camera. And luckily for fans of these less sensationalist professionals, Taps (The Atlantic Paranormal Society) investigator and founding member of the original Ghost Hunters, Steve Gonsalves, has just released a memoir detailing his personal experience as a researcher of the supernatural.

Some books have things that are easy to write about; some don’t. The more naturalistic a book is, the harder I find it to dig into – the more it’s just people living their lives, and the point of the book is seeing them, feeling some comparison to your own life, and making larger connections in your head.
A review can’t do any of that work for the reader. At best, it can point in interesting directions. At worst, it can short-circuit that process, making the book look facile and cheap and dull. Let’s see if I can find some interesting things to point towards, and avoid making vague windy claims.

El Estudio and Morbido are launching The Latin House of Horror, a hugely ambitious feature film slate channelling the voices of a powerful new generation of genre directors – and indeed writers – emerging in Spain and, most especially, Latin America.
The slate is designed to supercharge genre production in Latin America, in ambition, profile and exports, just as Filmax’s Fantastic Factory did a generation ago in Spain, El Estudio producer Enrique López Lavigne told Variety.
Mexico’s Sula Films, headed by Mexican producer Alejandro Sugich (“Los Hermanos Salvador”), will also produce the series. Vicente Canales’ Film Factory Entertainment is handling world sales.
Announced at Cannes, the House’s first slate of six movies features established talent such as Adrián García Bogliano, a founding figure of modern Argentine scarefare, now based out of Mexico; and Isaac Ezban, who rapidly established a reputation for films wrapped in hauntingly surreal scenarios: Think “The Incident” and “The Similars.

Spanish animation shows off its serious side in Cannes’ “Revelations!” showcase, dedicated to new shorts both by promising beginners and acclaimed filmmakers, such as Alberto Mielgo, who scored an Academy Award for “The Windshield Wiper.”
In June, four of the presented titles will also head to Annecy: María Lorenzo’s “Fashion Victims 2.0,” “Lost at Sea,” directed by Lucija Stojevic and Andrés Bartos, Pablo Río’s “Conej Steps Out” and Carla Pereira and Juanfran Jacinto’s “All Is Lost.”
“Animators, or just artists in general, tend to reflect on their times. Some of these films were born during the pandemic and yes, there is this melancholy to them. They are tackling multiple serious subjects,” says animation curator Carolina López Caballero.
That includes elderly suicide, like in the case of Diego Porral’s tender “Leopoldo from the Bar,” where a lonely man walks through ever-changing streets of Madrid accompanied by a massive pigeon.

Ben Whishaw won Leading Actor, Drama for This Is Going To Hurt., while The Traitors nabbed two awards, both in its category and for host Claudia Winkleman in Entertainment Performance.

It was a big night for Irish talent at this year’s British version of the Emmys, the BAFTA TV Awards, which were doled out at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Hosted by Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett, two Irish series — – “Bad Sisters” and “Derry Girls” — won a pair of prizes as did the telefilm “I Am Ruth.”
“Derry Girls” won Best Scripted Comedy for its fourth and final season, which was a lovely parting gift for writer and creator Lisa McGee. The show beat out “Ghosts,” “Big Boys,” and “Am I Being Unreasonable?” although the latter did pick up the prize for Best Comedy Actor for 14-year-old Lenny Rush. He edged out Matt Berry (“What We Do In The Shadows”), Joseph Gilgun (“Brassic”), Stephen Merchant (“The Outlaws”), Jon Pointing (“Big Boys”), and Daniel Radcliffe (“Weird: The Al Yankovic Story”).

The British version of the Emmys is set for Sunday, May 14 with the main ceremony of the BAFTAs taking place in London. While these awards aren’t exactly a, uh, crystal clear crystal ball for the Emmys, they can give some insight into which British shows may make the successful trip across the Atlantic. At the same time, it also gives an insight into which American shows are proving to be the Brits’ particular, uh, cup of tea.
This year’s BAFTA ceremony will take at the Royal Festival Hall and will be hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan. Two shows lead the way in nominations this year, with Ben Whishaw‘s “This is Going to Hurt” and Martin Freeman‘s “The Responder” each receiving six nominations.
Like the Emmys, the BAFTAs split their TV awards into two parts — the main ceremony and an earlier celebration devoted to celebrating the creative arts.

Netflix Remaking French Classic ‘The Wages Of Fear’ With Julien Leclercq At Helm; Unveils First Look
Netflix has announced a remake of the 1950s French classic The Wages of Fear (Le Salaire de la Peur), in a production reuniting the platform with action-thriller maestro Julien Leclercq.
Production is currently underway on the untitled film for a scheduled release in 2024.
The 1953 original starred Yves Montand, Peter van Eyck, Charles Vanel and Folco Lulli as four down-on-their-luck men who are hired to drive trucks laden with nitroglycerine through the mountains as part of an operation to extinguish an oil well fire.
The work is regarded as one of the most suspenseful action-thrillers of all time.
Leclercq’s reboot stars Franck Gastambide, best known internationally for his role in Taxi 5, opposite Alban Lenoir (Lost Bullet), Ana Girardot (The House) and Sofiane Zermani (No Limit).

Allison Tolman has been cast in “St. Denis Medical,” a comedy pilot at NBC from “Superstore” and “American Auto” creator Justin Spitzer.

Tolman recently held the recurring role of Winnie McLendon in “Gaslit,” the Starz limited series based on the Watergate scandal. To honor creators of animated Cinema, the International Animation Society presents the Annie Awards, the award show created to give the best-animated projects of the season with an award granted by Asifa-Hollywood (the Los Angeles division of the International Animation Society). Originating in 1972, the Annie Awards will see its 50th award show in February of 2023. Annie Awards 2023 Best Feature ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Pinnochio’ leads the Annie Awards nominations with nine nominations, including a nomination for Best Feature. The dark and twisted take on the century-old tale received critical acclaim and many awards for Guillermo and Netflix including a Golden Globe for Animated Feature, so it acts as a front-runner in the Best Feature category. When the copyright lawsuit between original Friday the 13th director/producer Sean S. Cunningham and screenwriter Victor Miller came to an end, Miller was awarded with the U.S. copyright to the first film. Miller went on to team up with his lawyer Marc Toberoff, A24, Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, and Friday the 13th franchise rights holder Rob Barsamian – the last surviving investor in the original film – to start developing the “expanded prequel” / “pre-remake-quel” TV series Crystal Lake for the Peacock streaming service. Thanks to the involvement of both Miller and Barsamian, that series can use all elements from the entire Friday the 13th franchise. But Cunningham isn’t just walking away from the Friday the 13th business. Our friends over at Bloody Disgusting have learned that Cunningham is overseeing reboots of Friday the 13th and the 1985 horror comedy House (which he produced), while also producing an original film called The Night Driver!

Bloody Disgusting has uncovered a big time scoop to finish off the week, learning that Sean S. Cunningham (Friday the 13th) is not only working to get his own Friday the 13th reboot off the ground, but he’s also developing a reboot of a horror movie he produced back in 1985, House. In addition, Cunningham is producing an original film titled The Night Driver, working alongside writer Jeff Locker and director Jeremy Weiss on the various upcoming projects.
Of course, the catch with all things Friday the 13th is that the franchise was up until recently mired in legal issues, with original screenwriter Victor Miller now joining forces with Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and A24 on a franchise prequel series for Peacock. That project is titled “Crystal Lake,” and Jeff Locker explains how a separate project could end up working.
