The Gold Digger

When Charles inherits a fortune, Nelly and her gang are on hand to bilk him out of it through marriage. But when push comes to shove, is she up to the scam?

This moderately nifty little crime film is decently produced for the era; the Selig company was the middle of the road production company of the Patents Trust, with a generous assortment of the many genre films that were becoming more popular -- although with a couple of favored lines in Tom Mix cowboy pictures and jungle epics, thanks to Selig's rapidly expanding menagerie. However, Selig's hesitancy to commit to feature production and the loss of their European markets during the Great War-- in short, changing tastes -- would put them out of business in a few more years.

In the meantime, there's this decently produced short movie that does what a hundred other movies has done. It's not noticeably bad nor good.

It has been written poorly

It is really something of a feat to find a happy ending for the situation that brings this picture. The crook heroine has married the hero to rob him and has helped her gang trap him and has even handed his money over to them in a satchel, but she relents and saves him and the money, and he forgives her. It is not a strong production; it has been written poorly and there are anti-climaxes in it. W.E. Wing is the author and Edward Le Saint produced it. - The Moving Picture World, June 27, 1914
