I have seen every Les Miserables adaptation currently available, and none of them are so consistently accurate down to nitpicky detail as this anime. The atmosphere is excellent, as is the voice acting and character design. At 52 episodes (24 mins each) the whole story can be told but there is also some time added with extra 'bits' to appeal to the younger generation for which it was aimed. However, apart from letting 2 characters live who died in the book, it is still very dark and keeps the overall tone, especially the poverty and grime of 19th Century Paris. Highly recommended for fans of the book (and the musical- there are some obvious shout outs to that as well), as long as you are able to sit through some overlong episodes that do little to advance the plot. The accuracy more than compensates for this!

Worthwhile effort

An earnest representation - in 52 half hour episodes - of the mammoth work of love, injustice and revolution. Tailored for the younger audience, the former is emphasized at the expense of the latter two elements, but they are still present to a reasonable degree. More unsettling is the inclusion of several significant characters who never appear in the novel as well as the altered destinies of at least two of those who do. The sweet introductory and concluding songs get kind of cloying after repeated listenings.
The single best adaptation of the novel

First of all "Shoujo Cossette" is one of the best anime I have ever watched. The serie consist of 52 episodes. I highly reccommend watching the anime it worth it. You can find out every detail of which novel does. You cannot find out these details on the other Les Miserable movies.
Additionally, if you do not enjoy reading books this anime is for you. The characters are well described and detailed. I admired the character of Jean Veljean. What a role model character.
There are some changes compared to the novel. For example, the characters Gavroche , Javert and Madame Thenardier are surviving characters. Fantine's necklace and dog Chou Chou and some details like that are not represented in the novel. As you can notice from the title, Cossette is the character protagonist. In the novel the main character was Jean Veljean. A wonderful masterpiece that managed to keep up with the novel despite all these changes. Personally I like this series more than the novel.

Not bad, but not entirely Hugo

At 52 episodes, this series takes sometime to get through, but it is not a total waste of one's efforts. What I found most attractive was the chance to explore many elements of the original novel which are often either omitted or passed over much too quickly in most cinematic presentations. For instance, the manner in which Marius becomes enamored of Cosette is well developed, rather than the rather rushed development shown elsewhere, What I found rather unsettling was the introduction o new characters - particularly the dog Chou Chou who, while thoroughly lovable, was not in the novel at all. There is also no Alain in the novel to take the place of Valjean when he is forced to abandon his factory and mayoralty. Finally, and most reprehensibly, the ends of Gavroche and Javert are CHANGED in this presentation!
Still, overlooking these liberties on the part of the screenwriters, an admirable effort.
