When watching a short, I'm always concerned that it's going to lose my interest after the first five minutes and I'll feel like 25 minutes of my day was wasted numbing my eyes. However, this story of searching and companionship was written, shot, directed, and acted so beautifully, I didn't want it to end. I wanted the cursor to go into 45 minutes, an hour. In my opinion, it fulfilled its ideal purpose; a short that can hold it's own, but it's only a part of the greater whole. The music is it's own character speaking both to its fellow travelers and the audience, like a jester. Travelin' Trains shows the depression era Georgia with a dusty whimsicality that spins you so light handedly, you don't even realize how fantastically dizzy you get at the climactic scene, but it brings you down again softly in the end. Needless to say, I highly recommend it.
