Warning: Spoilers
GW loved to finish off each season with a blockbuster episode, from the plane crash in S 1 to the Shadows/ Shinies battle in S 5. This was no exception, as the predominant story line of Melinda discovering the fate of her father is finally resolved. And it should be no surprise that a red herring was present throughout.

While it seems that emphasis on her quest was downplayed through much of the season, it was hinted at continuously. Many of the episodes had as their central theme parent/child relationships: the newly grown-up Ned and his mother, Becca and her parents, the violent child who occupies his brother's body, and, most importantly, Payne as father who is not the father... These are all analogous to Melinda's search.

One further point is the enigma of the 6-person/5-shadows scene at the end. Several interpretations have been suggestioned on the internet. It is ambiguous, but three possibilities exist as to who has the missing shadow:

Mel's mother, who never returns to the series

Professor Payne, whose last appearance is in S4 E1, leaving for a 6-month sabbatical, and then disappearing

Jim Clancy, whose body dies in S 4 and is buried, even though his spirit returns in the body of Sam

Ending with a literal foreshadowing

Ending with a literal foreshadowing is somehow unexpected. I mean, the writers were tired or something?

Maybe it was just a joke. I find it, though, a bit refreshing.

Interesting.

Gordon, her whole id was/is this. So, not a Gordon, yet keeps the name ??? This would make me want to at the very least change name, to, well even Clancy, her husbands name, as he has stood by her, believed in and of her...

So, then, the brother, ummm, well, if, huge if now on this, is Gordon even his father ? And well, as not Melinda s father, not her brother. Though none of this is addressed, but maybe explains why he vanished.

The whole of her mother not telling her about her father, her real father, as growing up she did NOT have one, no matter how much some will try and say she did. Never explained this either, and well her mom also seems to vanish, never meeting her grandson ???

Yes, i still enjoy the show, even with all this and more not adding up. Rating this, would put the show over all at a 9, the whole 5 seasons. If rem, with another glaring off in another season, will add why there. This episode, 8.

What kind of trauma recovery is involved after literally touching the dead rotting bones of your father? I would expect a lot. Pretty messed up and I don't think they touch on this fact enough. It's enough to think your dad is dead and then find out he isn't and then have him almost die and then find out he isn't your real dad after all and that dad is also dead. SO MUCH HAPPENING. So many secrets unloaded on Melinda at one time, and she's surprisingly okay after all of it. The ending cliffhanger is also good. Some people don't like where the show went but I love it.

I love this show so much, this is a great episode.

The End -- for now

Part 2 of a 2-parter to close out Season 3 has Melinda coming to grips with her father and her childhood. In the previous episode, she thought her father Tom Gordon (Martin Donovan) may have shot himself to death, but discovers he has survived. He has been intermittently possessed by a masked ghost who spent time in jail on a murder charge thanks to Tom Gordon when he wass a prosecutor and appears to want revenge on Gordon and family. But nothing in this episode is as it seems, and it takes a very long hour before things get straightened out. Anne Archer is back as Melinda's mom. By the way, the spectre behind the mask in this and the previous episode is Corin Nemec, a former child actor who has popped up on TV and in some "B" flicks in more recent years. Not one of GW's beter episodes, this season ender plays more like a soap opera than a thriller drama. The very end, with everyone marching arm in arm, contains an unexpected gag.
