Justine Triet’s Anatomy of a Fall that blew everyone away at the latest awards season is a dazzling mix of drama and crime thriller, but it’s the movie’s cutest actor that is probably one of the biggest reasons for such an immense success.
A French Border Collie called Messi proved to be a real dog star after his stunning and very dramatical performance — and it seems like Messi’s career is about to skyrocket again.
In Anatomy of a Fall, Messi played Snoop, Sandra and Vincent’s dog that they got for their visually impaired son Daniel’s guidance. The dog actor was trained for his big poisoning scene in the movie for two months and eventually his performance didn't go unnoticed — Messi (or rather his owner) took home several awards, including Palm Dog Award from the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.

Snoop, the border collie featured in best picture nominee Anatomy of a Fall, and figurines of monsters from Godzilla: Minus One, a nominee for best visual effects, competed for attention with A-listers including Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Bradley Cooper and Robert Downey Jr. at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon.
Per tradition, the gathering of nominees from across the 23 Oscar categories — along with their plus ones, members of the Academy’s board of governors and a handful of journalists also in the room — took place in the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton. Unlike Oscar night itself, nominees tend to feel less nervous at the luncheon, at which they are deliberately seated with nominees from other categories and films, and from which everyone leaves a winner. (See photos of the arrivals.)

Veteran German director Wim Wenders broke new ground during the Oscar nominations on Tuesday morning when he was nominated for his Japanese-language drama Perfect Days in the best international feature category.
This isn’t Wenders’ first Oscars rodeo. The 78-year-old German director has three Academy Award nominations to his name but all have come in the best documentary category. He was nominated in 2000 for the music doc Buena Vista Social Club about aging Cuban street musicians; in 2012 for Pina, a groundbreaking 3D documentary tribute to the work of legendary dance choreographer Pina Bausch; and in 2015 for The Salt of the Earth, a portrait of famed Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, co-directed with Salgado’s son, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado. Perfect Days does, however, mark Wenders’ first-ever Oscar nomination for a drama.

Three female directors saw their movies nab Best Picture nominations Tuesday morning, the first time that’s occurred in Oscar’s 96-year history: Celine Song with Past Lives, Great Gerwig with Barbie and Justine Triet with Anatomy of a Fall.
For a fifth consecutive year, at least one of the Best Picture nominees was directed by a woman.
In the directing category, Triet becomes the ninth woman to be nominated in the category. She is the only female filmmaker this year, joined by Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon), Christopher Nolan (Oppenheimer), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) and Jonathan Glazer (The Zone of Interest).
Previously, only four years counted two Best Picture noms from female filmmakers: 2009 for Lone Scherfig’s An Education and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, 2010 for Lisa Cholodenko’s The Kids Are All Right and Debra Granik’s Winter’s Bone, 2020 with Chloé Zhao’s Nomadland and...
