The short film is part of a series of documentaries produced in those years by Cines and dedicated to Italian locations: a policy that began with the arrival at the production house of Stefano Pittaluga and continued by Emilio Cecchi. In addition to Blasetti, the documentaries were commissioned to Bragaglia, Poggioli, Barbaro, Matarazzo and Perilli.
Assisi was shot in just ten days, between April and May 1932. After the editing and the addition of a spoken comment, entrusted to a cultured Dominican father, it was previewed in June in the Palace of the Apostolic Chancellery of Rome, by a group of high prelates including seven cardinals. The official presentation took place on August 9, 1932 in Venice, on the occasion of the 1st International Film Exhibition.
The short subject is available as an Extra on the Ripley Home Video release of the feature Palio.
