Many of the luchadors are seen without their masks on, which is unheard of in the lucha libre culture. A luchador's mask is such an integral part of their identity, the general public often have no idea what they really look like under their mask or even what their real name is. In many instances, luchadors will not even leave their homes without donning their masks, removing it only at home, or in some cases only to sleep or shower. Some even go so far as wearing the masks for their drivers licenses and passport photos in Mexico, and in many parts of the country, they are considered such folk heroes that it is considered a grave insult to steal a luchador's mask, or attempt to remove it from their head.
