Morgan Buffkin's parents own a payday loan business in New Mexico. Morgan works the hardest to run the business on a day-to-day basis; yet, in a business not noted for niceness, Morgan is a surprisingly nice guy. He visits a local college where they are doing DNA testing. Morgan has it done on a lark and discovers that he is not his mother's son. This launches his quest to find out who he and family really are. He also meets Julie Miller, a young British anthropologist who persuades him to do the test, and they date. Morgan tells her he is a banker and sets himself up to learn the consequences of dishonesty.
