The Duke City Shootout 2008 had a lot to offer both filmmakers and film viewers in the Southwest with better equipment, bigger crews, and a lot more interest. "Baker's Road Killings" stands out as a particularly morbid and existential offering in the midst of so much jocular fun and storytelling. It features the grittiest characters and the most disturbing themes, but more importantly, it's one of the best created movies in the festival.
Opening with a dark score reminiscent of Murder by Death's "Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them?", a lone man sits pulled over on Baker's Road by a woman cop. He's drunk, the car is stolen, and he has no driver's license, but worse yet, he seems to know a little too much about the policewoman and has far too much to say about the state of existence. Just as another another cop approaches, things get bloody, but once again nothing is as it seems. The backup cop is dirty, and the assassin has been seen...
It takes a lot of skill to be able to pull of disturbing, which is why disturbing movies are some of my favorites. Philosophy is not often well received by movie audiences. Perhaps that is why this movie didn't win the audience or critics award at the festival. Nevertheless, it stands out and is one of the best made, and everyone who worked on it were on top form. This is the type of movie that seems to come from the uncomfortable subconscious, making it the odd brother out in a group of eight. But it is very, very good.
