For the most part, this week's DVD releases consist of a handful of forgotten releases from the beginning of the year including Daybreakers, Edge of Darkness and Legion... it's open to debate whether or not they were overlooked or just plain bad. There's also a dose of late '90s nostalgia in the form of Daria: The Complete Animated Series, and some '80s memories as well with both The Karate Kid and The Karate Kid Part II out on Blu-ray. Other Blu-ray releases include the Criterion Collection for Fritz Lang's M, and a trio of Mel Brooks flicks. Do you see anything worth buying or renting this week? Daybreakers [1] (+ Blu-ray [2]) Edge of Darkness [3] (+ Blu-ray [4]) Legion [5] (+ Blu-ray [6]) North Face [7] Malice in Wonderland [8] Tidal Wave [9] (+ Blu-ray [10]) Legend of the Tsunami Warrior [11] (+ Blu-ray [12]) Art & Copy [13] P-Star Rising [14] Daria: The Complete Animated Series [15] The Fresh Prince of Bel Air: Complete Fifth...

P-Star Rising, an inspirational story of the musical ambitions of a young girl and her father, was a big hit at the Tff 2009 Drive-In, where the movie screened and P-Star performed before an audience of thousands. It was a much more intimate crowd last Monday night at Tribeca Cinemas, where Gabriel Noble's film kicked off the Tribeca Cinemas Doc Series. (If you missed P-Star Rising, you can catch it February 9 on PBS.) During the Q and A after the film, Priscilla Star and her father Jesse Diaz were on hand, as were director Noble and producer Marjan Tehrani. A "fearless" and radiant Priscilla handled the crowd with aplomb, and an apparent maturity beyond her years. When asked about life after the movie, she explained, "I write music now. I write for other people. The music I am doing now is commercial, crossover music--dance, hiphop, pop, put together--it's all about publishing now.

A documentary? In Noble's touching, fascinating work, we get the backstory on the now-teenage Priscilla Star Diaz, who's currently charming fans on the 2009 reboot of the classic children's show, The Electric Company. We meet her family: shy older sister Solsky and her father, single dad Jesse Diaz, a former rising star of hip-hop who finds himself broke and living in a shelter with his two young girls.
