Everyone loves a good shark movie. Ever since Jaws hit theaters and broke box office records in 1975, it’s been a reliable horror movie genre. While everyone knows Jaws is by far the best shark movie ever, there are loads of other movies out there that should make you just as afraid to get in the water. We’re gonna need a bigger boat as we travel these dangerous waters of shark films.
Zombie (1979)
Ok. Already I’m cheating, but I mean . . . come on. This has one of the best shark scenes in cinematic history. During an early scene of the movie, a woman decides to go for a swim in the lovely Caribbean waters when a tiger shark appears. As she hides among some of the terrain on the ocean floor, she quickly finds she is not alone. A zombie has found his way into the depths.

Animal attack movies have been quite a lucrative genre for a very long time. Obviously, Jaws is the beginning and the end of the conversation but there’s so much more. Grizzlies, whales, dogs, you name it have been the focal point of horror films and will continue to be there with things like Cocaine Bear, The Meg 2, and others infiltrating theaters on a yearly basis. Most of these, of course, are fictional accounts like Stephen King giving us Cujo or any number of other on-screen animals gone wild. There are, however, the rare account that is based on a true story and today is one of those cases. Alligators and crocodiles...

Following the enormous critical and financial success in the local theaters, the release of “The Meg” in Chinese cinemas started a wave of similarly-produced creature features and animal-attack films to capitalize on its release. That has led to a steady stream of cheap, goofy creature features that remains popular churning out titles to this day which includes this one from 2021 that takes its influence from the Australian film “The Reef” from 2011 and “The Shallows” from 2017.

James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” swept the 21st annual Ves Awards Wednesday night in an unprecedented wave of dominance in every category, winning nine of its record-breaking 14 nominations, including the top photoreal feature, and the newest category, The Emerging Technology Award, for its innovative water toolset.
Although the prestigious visual effects honorary society has not been a reliable Oscar bellwether in recent years — picking the VFX winner only twice in the last six years — this now looks like a lock for the “Avatar” sequel.
Hosted by Patton Oswalt at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, “Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” (from Netflix) — the favorite to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar — won the top animation trophy and took home three awards; Amazon’s “Thirteen Lives” snagged the supporting prize, and Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” grabbed the episodic prize and also took home three awards.

As we mentioned a number of times before, here in Amp, we received tens of ‘quarantine films’, productions which were shot during lockdowns or at least having in mind the restrictions the pandemic forced on all of us. After a point, the majority of them start looking annoyingly similar, either as intricate zoom videos or on occasion, as if someone just picked up a phone inside their apartment and just shot whatever they could. Therefore, it comes as a surprise to see that films of this style are still being produced, and even more so, that they could stray quite far away from the norm, and in the case of “Rafa”, even from the norms of Iranian cinema.

Today, writer/director Andrew Traucki’s The Reef: Stalked arrives in theaters and on Shudder. Starring Teressa Liane, Ann Truong, Saskia Archer, and Kate Lister, the sequel follows a group of women who come together for an idyllic kayaking trip after losing someone close to them to domestic violence. But when they encounter a bloodthirsty shark determined to make them its next victims, they must band together so they can survive the horrors awaiting them in the water.
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Traucki about The Reef: Stalked (nearly 11 years to the day that this writer last spoke to the filmmaker about The Reef), and during our conversation, he discussed how the stars aligned to make the sequel more than a decade later, why it was important for him to focus part of this story on the issue of domestic violence, the challenges he faces while making his naturalistic thrillers,...

Despite the title and presence of writer/director Andrew Traucki, The Reef: Stalked is not a sequel to The Reef. Rather, like his films Black Water and Black Water: Abyss they’re unrelated films that share only a common monster, crocodiles in Black Water, and sharks in The Reef.
This time around we’re introduced to diving enthusiast Nic. After she finds her sister Cath dead, drowned in the bathtub by her abusive boyfriend Greg however that changes.
Nine months later she can’t even see water let alone resume diving, without imagining her sister’s death. Hoping it’ll be therapeutic she joins her old diving crew Jodie and Lisa, and her other sister Annie (Saskia Archer; Bali 2002) at the beach. Their kayaking trip turns out to be anything but...

In a world full of schlocky shark films, if you want yours to be taken more seriously, it pays to set the right tone from the start. This sequel to 2010’s The Reef (with the same director if not – for obvious reasons – the same cast) opens with four young women messing about in water. Two things stand out about them: firstly, two of them are competent spear fishers, and secondly, their swimwear, whilst skimpy, is built to flatten rather than flatter – it’s actually designed for swimming in. They may be playful but they also know how to be serious.
This matters because they’re about to have to deal with a serious situation, way before we see any sharks, when one of them falls victim to a more mundane type of predator. It’s an incident which leaves heroine Nic (Teressa Liane) reeling. Although she puts up a good.

"It's not gonna stop!!" Rlje + Shudder have debuted a final, wild trailer for The Reef: Stalked, the shark horror movie out in theaters this week - starting on July 29th. The Reef: Stalked is a sequel to Australian director Andrew Traucki's shark movie The Reef from 2010, and Traucki returns to write & direct this one 12 years later. After her sister's murder, Nic, her younger sister and two friends seek solace through a Pacific island kayaking adventure. Hours into the trip the women are stalked by a shark and must band together, face their fears and save each other facing the beast. This movie stars Teressa Liane (from "The Vampire Diaries"), Ann Truong (seen in "Cowboy Bebop"), Saskia Archer, Kate Lister, and Tim Ross. These trailers have not been that impressive, especially with so many other shark movies this year. There's barely any clear shots of the shark, just a lot of screaming.

Bloody Disgusting’s The Reef Stalked review is spoiler-free. Writer/Director Andrew Traucki‘s 2010 movie The Reef took a less is more approach in narrative bolstered by composited footage of actual sharks. Despite some good suspense, this all feels too familiar as a shark with a hefty appetite seems irrationally keen to feast on the protagonist
Director Andrew Traucki’s sequel to his own 2010 feature The Reef features a whole new cast of Australian characters battling a hefty shark near the Great Barrier Reef, but it’s essentially the same idea. Only this time round, the nearly entirely female cast features two sisters and two of their friends on a kayaking excursion that goes wrong but not through any fault of their own. Indeed, in a break with the traditional blame-the-humans strategy of these sort of when-animals-attack stories, the landlubbers aren’t being punished by the universe for hubris, or a failure to heed the warnings or some such.
That said, the past does shape the story: main protagonist Nic (Teressa Liane) was traumatised nine months earlier when her other sister was murdered by an abusive partner,...

Unbeknownst to them, a passenger is pre-selected and pre-infected with a truly horrific pathogen. Boarding the plane, the virus lies dormant within their body, awaiting to be awakened. Unbeknownst to them, a passenger is pre-selected and pre-infected with a truly horrific pathogen. Boarding the plane, the virus lies dormant within their body, awaiting to be awakened. Once activated it transforms its unwilling host into a highly intelligent, flesh craving, barely controllable weaponised monster.
Flesh rots, senses heighten but not all goes according to plan...

Andrew Traucki’s The Reef is one of the best shark attack horror movies ever made, a simple tale of friends stranded in shark-infested waters that’s made all the more terrifying due to Traucki’s insistence on using real sharks rather than animatronic or computer-generated ones. This summer, a brand new sequel titled The Reef: Stalked is coming to […]

Rlje Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, and Shudder, the company’s streaming service for horror, thriller and supernatural content, have acquired the North American rights to “The Reef: Stalked.”
The shark survival tale will be released in theaters, as well as on digital and on-demand platforms on July 29, 2022. It will be available to Shudder subscribers on the same day.
Written and directed by Andrew Traucki as a follow up to his 2010 film, “The Reef,” the sequel stars Teressa Liane (“The Vampire Diaries”), Ann Truong (“Cowboy Bebop”), Saskia Archer (Boshack), Kate Lister (“Clickbait”) and Tim Ross (“Wonderland”).
“Audiences have an insatiable appetite for shark films, which we know first-hand from our incredible experience releasing ‘The Reef’ years ago,” said Mark Ward, chief acquisitions officer of Rlje Films. “We are thrilled to be working with the team again to bring this new terrifying adventure to audiences.”

Opens with an oddly “fake” looking scene that feels like it was shot entirely on a green screen soundstage – which for all I know might be true, especially given the copious amounts of CGI featured in the film as a whole… Yes, we’re in CGI shark territory (combined with stock footage – how very The Asylum of this film) in this one folks!
The Requin, aka From Below, stars Alicia Silverstone [Sidebar; who would have thought we’d ever see Alicia Silverstone in a shark movie? Seriously?] as Jaelyn who, along with her husband Kyle (James Tupper) are on holiday in Vietnam following Jaelyn’s miscarriage. Of course, being a shark movie we know things aren’t going to go according to plan for the couple. Kyle gets injured whilst swimming, his blood pouring into the ocean waters like some sort of obvious foreshadowing, whilst Jaelyn has flashbacks to her miscarriage.

So we’re still on the idea that sharks are dangerous creatures and will target human beings for one reason or another, got it. That’s probably too cynical of an observation for Great White but the truth is that while shark movies are a lot of fun sometimes, in the spirit of fiction, it’s still easy to roll one’s eyes simply because it’s a trope that does get a bit old after a while. But all the same, the fear of being stuck on the open ocean where there are plenty of predators to be found in certain areas is enough

Survival thriller aficionado Andrew Traucki has commenced production on his latest project The Reef: Stalked, a sequel to 2010’s The Reef.
Filming began today in Queensland’s Bowen and will continue for six weeks.
Teressa Liane (The Vampire Diaries), Ann Truong Kate Lister and newcomer Saskia Archer make up the cast, playing four friends on a kayaking and diving trip in Papua New Guinea that soon goes sideways.
Much like in the original film, the group must face down a great white shark, with this instalment exploring resilience, recovering from trauma and the strength of female friendship.
“I’m thrilled The Reef: Stalked is in production and back to Bowen where we shot parts of The Reef 11 years ago,” writer/director Traucki said in a statement.
“As a lover of survival tales, there is nothing I enjoy more than storytelling that pits humans against nature and asks the question ‘How would I survive?...

Who doesn’t love a good shark movie? Hell, who doesn’t love a bad shark movie?! There’s certainly a wide variety of shark movies available these days (and I think we’ve reviewed most of them here on Nerdly too), from ridiculous films like Ouija Shark, Ghost Shark and Virus Shark, to The Asylum’s Sharknado franchise and more mainstream fare such as 47 Metres Down, The Shallows and The Reef.
And it’s with the latter film that Great White feels most in common. Both films come from Australian filmmakers, both films feature a small group of people stranded at the beck and call of great whites… But then aren’t all shark film usually about a small group of people trapped by sharks?

Happy Thursday, everyone! As we get closer to the weekend, you may be thinking about catching up on some horror and sci-fi movies over the next few days. And if that is the case, then perhaps I can help out with a recommendation—or 40. With our Indie Horror Month celebration still underway, I scoured the entirety of Tubi TV’s streaming horror library to put together this list of 40 excellent genre movies that are currently available to watch on their platform.
And because Tubi TV’s variety of titles are vast, I was able to put together an extensive list that should have a little something for every kind of genre fan out there. So, if you’re looking to expand your horizons a little bit—or maybe you want to catch up with some of your own genre favorites—check out this list of 40 indie horror and sci-fi films...

With Lovecraft Country still providing HBO and HBO Max with its horror content through October, the streamer is looking elsewhere for its spooky season offerings. HBO Max’s new releases for October 2020 feature some truly awesome horror library titles.
Jordan Peele’s Us, John Carpenter’s The Thing, and David Fincher’s Se7en all arrive on Oct. 1. That alone should be enough to last you through spooky season. And if it doesn’t, It: Chapter Two is right there as well. October is also a big month for Batman and Superman with Man of Steel arriving on Oct. 1 along with a whole of animated specials dropping that same day.
In relation to the library titles, this isn’t HBO Max’s strongest month from an original perspective. But there is still plenty to like here. The West Wing election special arrives on Oct. 15. That will be followed by David Byrne...

As HBO Max — the massive new streaming service launched by Warner Media this past summer — continues to add to its vast programming selection, this October bring a wealth of new horror titles to the platform just in time for Halloween.
HBO Max not only has scores of horror movies already licensed to HBO from other studios, but the service can also delve deeply into the legendary Warner Bros. Pictures vaults as well. And one of the prized finds that will debut on HBO Max next month is a selection of classics from the storied library of Hammer Films.
Warner Bros. Pictures was the U.S. distributor for a number of Hammer movies during the 1960s and 1970s, when the British studio dominated the horror genre with a slew of movies based on classic monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein’s creature and the Mummy, along with many other stylish originals and adaptations of genre tales.

HBO Max is serving up a lot of great new movies this October. Fittingly for the spooky season, the Warner Bros. streaming service is adding a fair few classic horrors to its library next month, but there’s really something for everyone going up – from comedies to romances to sci-fi to superhero films.

Black Water: Abyss was one of the first new film releases here in the UK, to welcome audiences back to the joys of the cinema after many (though not all) re-opened on the 4th July. In fact it was this writer’s first trip back to a cinema since 2020 went to hell in a handbasket and Covid tried to drag the movie industry into the dark and murky waters, and thankfully it proved to be a wise choice. As Black Water: Abyss is arguably the perfect kind of flick to see in a cinema environment. As the senses are elevated and director Andrew Traucki’s sequel to his 2007 crocodile horror Black Water is another effective nail biting natural horror.

Deep Blue Sea 3 has hit the internet, and one of the most frequent postings about it, aside from links to illicit downloads and queries of when the hell Deep Blue Sea 2 slipped into existence, are comments from viewers observing how surprisingly enjoyable they found it.
Deep Blue Sea 2 saw a shady biotech company experimenting on bull sharks to enhance their intelligence to develop mind-expanding pharmaceuticals, and ended with several of their number escaping into the ocean. This third movie takes place on an almost entirely abandoned fishing island where scientist Emma Collins and her team are researching the effects of climate change, when an assortment of stubbled manly men, led by Emma’s ex, come swaggering over the horizon as they attempt to track and capture the genetically modified predators, leading to the blue sea turning red in explosions of carnage.

Perhaps Universal’s most renowned contributions to cinema lie in their horror library. Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, if you can name it they probably made it. But until now, that awesome catalogue was unavailable to view in one place. Sounds like the grousing of a spoilt millennial, I know. The fact is that we’ve all become accustomed to having content at our fingertips. Praise be then that a streaming service has today launched to fulfil that demand. Peacock brings Universal’s esteemed horror collection to the masses.
Unlike its rivals, the service has both a paid-for package and a free one (though you’ll have to contend with adverts). Why not take a look at all the horror films currently available for free, though? Trick question, as there’s no reason why not to. That’s why all the horror films currently available for free are listed below.

ABC has cancelled their second drama series of Summer 2019, Reef Break, after one season. The network previously dropped freshman entry Grand Hotel. Both had very low ratings and were outperformed by game shows and reality programs.

These days, she works as the fixer for the governor of a beautiful Pacific Island paradise — “The Reef.” Thanks to her checkered past, Cat has a deep understanding of criminals and the crimes they commit.
