Despite the somewhat misleading English title (the original name can be roughly translated as “a lovely ride”), Driving Madeleine by a French director Christian Carion, is not exactly what it seems and has some surprises stored. Carion, who is mostly known for his historical drama Joyeux Noël and thriller My Son (as well as its auto-remake), offers up a crowd-pleaser in a popular genre called “two strangers with different experiences meet and influence each other’s lives”. In this fourth collaboration between two French legends, 95-year-old goddess Line Renaud and comedy icon Dany Boon, the latter is the typical Parisian taxi driver. Meaning: his Charles is generally gloomy and is one ticket away from losing his license. He is also discontent with the state of things:...

It’s impossible to talk about Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio without considering the music. Del Toro’s Netflix adaptation of the Carlo Collodi story takes place in 1930s Italy, during the Fascist reign of Benito Mussolini. In this story, woodcarver Geppetto (David Bradley) loses his son Carlo in an aerial bombing and carves Pinocchio (Gregory Mann) from the tree at his son’s grave. Composer Alexandre Desplat, who worked with del Toro on The Shape of Water, was tasked with capturing the “joyous melancholy” of the wooden boy in music. To enhance the connection between the character of Pinocchio and the music, Desplat made the choice to only use wooden instruments in the score. Below, Desplat breaks down three key pieces of the score – “Carlo’s Theme,” “Going to Town” and “Saving Geppetto” – with the corresponding scenes included for reference.
“Carlo’s Theme” was the first piece of the score that Desplat wrote.

Exclusive: Jonas Dassler (The Golden Glove) has been tapped to play German pastor and theologian-turned-spy Dietrich Bonhoeffer in the thriller God’s Spy, based on a true story.
Others set for the pic written and directed by Sully scribe Todd Komarnicki include Flula Borg (The Suicide Squad), David Jonsson (Industry), August Diehl (A Hidden Life), Moritz Bleibtreu (World War Z) and BAFTA Award nominee Clarke Peters (The Wire).
The film currently in production is set in Berlin during the time of the Third Reich, examining Bonhoeffer’s determination to live his life with uncompromising political and spiritual courage, while speaking truth to power, in his attempt to save countless Jewish lives. Bonhoeffer was among only a few clergy who were early to recognize the danger of Hitler’s anti-Semitic rhetoric, and while the German church acquiesced to Hitler, Bonhoeffer took him on. First, from the pulpit — and then from the front lines.

Former Star Wars star Gina Carano is set to play a secret service agent whose hair is sniffed by Joe Biden in a new biopic .
Distributed by the controversial far-right media organisation Breitbart News, the film, entitled My Son Hunter, focuses on the US President’s son, Hunter Biden, played by Laurence Fox.
Carano plays a secret service agent tasked with working in close proximity with Biden, while John James (Dynasty) plays Biden himself.
The teaser asks viewers to “witness the sensational, bombshell, unbelievable, scandalous, corrupt, censored, shocking true story” of the Bidens’ lives.
Despite this claim, the film is expected to deviate significantly from confirmed fact. My Son Hunter’s opening line, delivered by Carano’s character, reportedly disclaims: “This is not a true story, except for all the facts.”

In My Son, the actor goes from scene to scene without a script trying to find his child, a bizarre new low for pandemic cinema
The pandemic has subjected us to a brave new world of cinematic experiences: a seance horror on Zoom, Anne Hathaway trying to rob Harrods, Naomi Watts taking phone calls in a forest, films that have shown either admirable ingenuity during an impossible period or that it’s really Ok, nay better, at times to just put your tools down and bake banana bread instead.

“My Son” is a gimmick in search of a movie. Co-writer/director Christian Carion (“Joyeux Noel”) adapts his own 2017 French film of the same name, which was unexpectedly dropped to Peacock after forgoing the theatrical or VOD route. Coming seemingly out of nowhere, the thriller boasts two undeniably talented stars, one of whom was reportedly not given a script or dialogue in an attempt to capture the confusion and panic of his protagonist—the same technique Carion used the first time with stars Guillaume Canet and Melanie Laurent to very mixed reviews.

STXfilms has closed a deal to premiere its upcoming movie “My Son,” a thriller starring James McAvoy and Claire Foy, on both Peacock and The Roku Channel.
The film’s release represents a deviation from traditional streaming windows, in which one digital platform would house a new title for an extended period of time. James McAvoy in his latest film "My Son" was given no script, no specific dialogue and was only aware of basic plot details for his character. The remaining cast and crew was fully aware of everything that was about to happen to him, and in the first trailer for "My Son," you can see him improvising and reacting in real time to the action as the story unfolds.
"My Son" is directed by Christian Carion and is a remake of Carion's own French film from 2017. That film too was a similar improvisational experiment, in which the film's lead was also kept in the dark about the plot until it all happened. In McAvoy's case, that means we get to see him "have an experience that no actor gets to have," as he says in an introduction for the trailer.

The theme at the heart of David Oyelowo’s directorial debut, “The Water Man,” is the strength of families. Opening May 7, the feature revolves around Gunner (Lonnie Chavis), a boy who ventures out to find the Water Man — a mythical figure with healing powers who might be able to cure his terminally ill mother, Mary, played by Rosario Dawson.
Family also played a central role when it came to creating the film’s sonic landscape. While composer Peter Baert crafted much of the film’s score, Oyelowo’s wife, Jessica, had already contributed some songs.
“David wanted my character, Missus Bakemeyer, to be playing the piano when Gunner comes to the bookstore,” explains Jessica Oyelowo, a musician and composer who makes a cameo appearance. “We were trying to find a piece of music that I could play where we wouldn’t have to deal with all the licensing. Exclusive: Claire Foy has signed on to star in the upcoming feature, The Pisces, based on author Melissa Broder’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name. Broder and Gillian Robespierre penned the script that Robespierre will direct. Foy, who is the latest addition to the project, will play a PhD student plagued with writer’s block and romantic obsession.
The Pisces is centered on Lucy’s erotic infatuation with a merman. But as fantastical as that sounds sounds, it is more than just a lady-fishman love story. It’s an exploration of the boundaries between pleasure and possession, fantasy vs. reality and the way women choose the men in their lives.
Archer Gray’s Anne Carey developed the script with Broder and Robespierre. Carey and Amy Nauiokas will produce under their Archer Gray banner.
The novel was published in 2018 by Hogarth Press in the U.S. and Bloomsbury Publishing in the UK.
