The Great Lakes freighter featured in this program, the Col. James M. Schoonmaker (now a museum ship in Toledo, Ohio) was launched July 1, 1911, in Ecorse, Mich. - just a little more than a month after Titanic was launched in Belfast - and entered service that October. Schoonmaker, at the time of her launch the largest ship on the Great Lakes at 617 feet (compared to Titanic's 882 feet 9 inches), would remain in active service until 1980.
