AUTEC stands for Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center, which is a United States Navy facility located in Andros, Bahamas. Its purpose is to conduct undersea warfare testing and simulations for United States Navy submarine captains and their crew, certifying their proficiency in submarine warfare, there is even a live-fire weapons course for testing the accuracy of a submarine's torpedoes. The testing range is in an area off the coast of the Bahamas known as the Tongue of the Ocean, which is a deep-ocean basin approximately 100 nautical miles (190 km) long by 15 nautical miles (28 km) wide, with depths as great as 6,000 feet (1,800 m).
