A bit superficial and a bit short, but a nice introduction to the work of Joseph Mankiewicz.

This is a 26 minute short that's included on the "All About Eve" DVD. One odd thing I immediately noticed was that the color portions of the film were strange as the color saturation was out of whack. I don't know why and it really didn't effect the overall film.

For those not acquainted with the career and work of Joseph Mankiewicz, this is a nice introduction. It inspires interest in his films and also does NOT ignore his follies (the infamously expensive "Cleopatra"). He was very famous as a writer, producer and director--with several Oscars to his credits during his long career. However, because he was so incredibly important to the film industry and wore so many hats so well, it does seem a shame to cram all this into only 26 minutes. As a result, much of his work simply is ignored--including some excellent films. Instead, it focuses mostly on just a small handful of movies--in particular "All About Eve" and "Cleopatra". Still, despite being sketchy, it's well worth seeing.

Ambition was the main theme of Joseph L. Mankiewicz flicks . . .

Warning: Spoilers
. . . reveals this 2008 DVD extra included with Fox's ALL ABOUT EVE release. Like any good American, Mankiewicz preferred to make articulated thoughts the crux of his movies, as opposed to the Mindless Action which appeals to the Nazi Confederate Red State audiences and the foreigners populating the rest of the world. Unfortunately for Joe, future Tinseltown perfume shill Liz Taylor had director approval for CLEOPATRA, filmed while the Fox Film Studio was as broke and bankrupt as a Trump Casino. Since Liz's only allowable alternative to Mankiewicz--George Stevens--was busy shooting a legitimate film for a money-making outfit, Mankiewicz was offered the CLEOPATRA project as a last-ditch effort to "save" Fox. Being a Good Joe, he took on this Action Epic totally at odds with his forte, and proceeded to make TWO 150-minute stories, following in William Shakespeare's footsteps. But Fox villain Darryl F. Zanuck, completely unfamiliar with the Bard of Avon, chopped up Joe's work into a Misbegotten Mess because he feared that Liz would dump her stolen husband co-star Dick Burton BEFORE both parts of CLEOPATRA could be released. (This would be akin to cramming the GODFATHER into one flick BEFORE Marlon Brando's kids could kill anyone else in Real Life.)
