Exquisite Ghost
Polaris_DiB16 January 2010
Warning: Spoilers
The opening titles basically outline it pretty well: in a set built for the film Milk Jenni Olsen and crew filmed a movie and layered it over with an actual recording by Harvey Milk "to be played only in the event of my assassination." (Uncanny enough? Well, ghosts are everywhere in this movie). In the tape, Milk calls for people to come out and states that hope is what it is all about, while the reflected light of passing vehicles flash over the set, creating a phantasmagoric, ghostly feel. The set in question is specifically Milk's photo development shop, a place where the films from the first gay film festival in San Francisco were developed, suturing the memory of Milk and film irreversibly together within this same short film.
