When this show first started I thought we could have a nice Dexter experience again, but that doesn't happen. Pointless plots, plot holes and, the worst, retroactive continuity.
Acting wise the show is good, I personally thought Jennifer Carpenter was on her sharpest as Debra Morgan, it is amazing how she matured the role and came back years later as an even better Deb.
The setting placed on a cold, sparse populated Iron Lake with a little over 2,000 people feels fitting for a "retired" serial killer. The bonding between an absent father and his son also feels right.
The problem lies totally on terrible writing the show has, we are introduced to characters with a minimum background - which implies a story will be unfold - that are scrapped off. There are also forced connections that the writers make to give on a silver platter information that are relevant on the time some characters need those information. Finally we gave the retcon, the writers expect you to accept CHANGES on the original series just because they couldn't find a different way to fit this season narrative on established lore, it is infuriating.
Writer Clyde Philips said "With the bad taste that the original finale left in everybody's mouth, we had this rare opportunity to redeem the show and to give the audience the respect it deserves, the authenticity it deserves, and the gratitude for sticking with us", congratulations on writing an even worst ending, that's a feat.
