I tried making a conscious effort to find posters in areas I might not have normally visited this year. That’s the effect of having been able to follow so many design firms and artists on Twitter before a majority (justifiably) bailed upon its sale. With such broad and instant access, the ease at which I discovered new releases made it so I often forget to look elsewhere.
Imp Awards is still a great resource, if only to sift through everything they’ve tagged as a given year to see if something got missed. Then there’s Brandon Schaefer‘s year-end collections and Adrian Curry’s extensive Mubi posts and Instagram to get an inside look from two poster artists and connoisseurs. And there’s a slew of other accounts who keep on the pulse of the art form when so many (e.g. studios who commission the work) can...

"I just got dumped by my future." Film Movement has revealed an official US trailer for a Kiwi coming-of-age comedy called Millie Lies Low, marking the feature directorial debut of a filmmaker named Michelle Savill. This initially premiered at the 2021 New Zealand Film Festival, before also screening at many other fests in 2022: Berlinale, SXSW, Melbourne, Edinburgh, Philadelphia. Set to open in US art house theaters this month. Anxiety-ridden Millie is on her way from Wellington to NYC for an internship at a prestigious architecture firm when a moment of panic causes her to miss her flight - so she pretends to be there anyway while camping out in New Zealand. It's been compared to Fleabag + Eighth Grade, which should be enough to get your attention. Starring Ana Scotney as Millie, Rachel House, Chris Alosio, Jillian Nguyen, & Sam Cotton. This also reminds me of the dark comedy Not Okay with...

Millie Lies Low kicks off with an interesting idea. Also, an idea I was instantly uncomfortable with.
I don’t like over-focus on personal suffering, though that is me. Please don’t let my personal bugbears get in the way of your enjoying a drama that’s both different and, in its own small way, has some stuff to say about social awkwardness, anxiety, and the fear of offending. Though there may be other reasons for being less than positive about Millie and her lying low.
Here’s the set-up. We open with Millie (Ana Scotney) on a plane – and then Millie getting off a plane. It looks like a panic attack. Unfortunately, that doesn’t count as a medical emergency. So, it’s goodbye flight and, more seriously, hello to a 2,000 bill if she wants a new ticket. Did I mention that Millie is a talented New Zealand architectural...

Millie Lies Low is a dryly funny deadpan character study of the titular deeply troubled sociopath, and her faux journey to a New York architecture firm Internship placement. Having recently beaten her best friend (Jillian Nguyen) and fellow classmate for the position, for reasons not yet known Millie is overcome by a panic attack and desperately claws her way off the plane bound for the States from Wellington Airport. Millie mills about, alot throughout this film it turns out, it is on the tin, 'lies low'. This translates into the brilliant non-verbal comedy, often minutes without dialogue, that give way to Millie's manic energy garnered mostly from her facial expressions. When she realizes what she has done, and that a...
