Official remake of Han Dong-wook's 2014 homonymous film, “Man in Love” was also a success in Taiwan, retaining the number one spot in the local box office for three weeks, while netting the protagonist, Roy Chiu, a Best Leading Actor Award from the 23rd Taipei Film Awards. Taiwan’s gross box office for the first quarter of 2023 topped Nt$2bn ($65.6m), up 5% on the same period in 2019, according to a leading distributor.
“It is really exciting to see audiences finally return to movie theatres,” said Wayne Chang founder of distributor GaragePlay and acquisition company MovieCloud. “The total box office was over Nt$2bn ($65.6m) for 2023 Q1, which is even better than the Nt$1.9bn ($62.3m) for pre-Covid 2019 Q1.”

Netflix has scooped up the global streaming rights to Taiwanese horror blockbuster Incantation, which it will release worldwide on July 8. The film was released theatrically in Taiwan in March and has been described as the “scariest Taiwanese film ever.” So far, it has earned 5.7 million (TW170 million) in cinemas, making it the highest-grossing film at the Taiwan box office this year, as well as the top-earning original Taiwanese horror film of all time.

The tear-jerking, patriotic pandemic film “Chinese Doctors” locked down a $53.5 million China opening weekend, according to Maoyan, setting itself up to become the most commercially successful political tribute film so far this year.
Such films have been helped along by a line-up cleared of competitors. This week, only political films, children’s content and a holdover rom-com grossed more than $1 million.
Produced by Bona Film, “Chinese Doctors” is inspired by the real experiences of medical personnel in Wuhan during the early days of the pandemic. It earned more than twice the three-day debut of fellow nationalistic tribute to the Communist Party, “1921,” which earned $21.4 million last weekend. Around $2 million of sales for “Chinese Doctor” came from Imax screens.
This week, “1921” came in second with further sales of $6.58 million, bringing up its cume so far to $64 million. Imax didn’t provide further data as to how much box office it earned from the title.

Update: After a couple of relatively slow sessions, China turned up the heat again this weekend as the five-day May Day/Labor Day holiday dawned. At least 10 new local titles released across Friday and Saturday with romance drama My Love in the lead through Sunday at an estimated Rmb 424M ($65M). It was followed by Zhang Yimou’s better-reviewed Cliff Walkers with Rmb 260M ($40M) and Leste Chen’s crime thriller Home Sweet Home Rmb 126M ($19.5M). Those three films, plus others in the pack of new offerings from the Middle Kingdom, were the top grossers globally this session. Overall, IMAX had a solid China weekend with Cliff Walkers at $2.3M, and gaining $1M from Home Sweet Home.

Of that, $320M comes from the international box office in 41 markets. The monster mash, already the biggest Hollywood movie of the pandemic era, continues to track above its Monsterverse predecessors. It is the highest-grossing of the films in 19 markets including China, Russia, Spain, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mexico.
In combined like-for-like markets and at today’s rates, Gvk is running 6% above Kong: Skull Island, 44% over Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and 90% ahead of Godzilla. And, there are still over 20 markets to come including Brazil, Japan and the UK.
