Stop retconning this show
thadgordon3630 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
We all know that Abe told Homer his mom died while he was at the movies. He held this belief for 27 years before learning that she was still alive. I don't know if the problem is writers who don't know the shows history, or that they just don't care.

Also, can we please stop pretending that Mona is ANYTHING other than a bad mom?

Seems forced
Greenuxx18 January 2022
Story seems forced and as everyone already knows, this episode contradicts a classic episode "Mother Simpson" . I also feel like the storyline was really rushed. This was disappointing and kinda boring. It's an average episode, but it shouldn't be when it's trying to be this important. It's just ok.

Mothers and Other Strangers
studioAT26 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Your enjoyment of this episode will come down to one thing:

can you overlook the jarring retcon that takes place here as the whole timeline regaring Mother Mona Simpson is put into place. I suppose for the show to continue it has to happen, but for those of us who have been with 'The Simpsons' from the start I can see why there is annoyance among the ranks.

Judged on its own merits though this episode is perfectly fine, and there's lots to like, and I like how Glenn Close comes back each time to voice Mona, it's a nice touch.

So if you can get over the retcon you'll enjoy this I'm sure. If you can't then go back on old episodes instead.

A glaring retcon
turquoise_star_174 December 2021
Some scenes were okay, but this episode had one major issue. On Mother's Day, Homer is grieving the loss of his mother Mona, who had been a fugitive since his childhood. He reminisces about a teenage road trip to Utah with his father Abe to find his mother, eventually succeeding.

This directly contradicts Season 7's "Mother Simpson" in that after Mona went on the run, Abe told Homer she had died. He held this belief for 27 years until her return when he is 39 (so he could not have seen her as a teen) and it was the main reason for his ongoing difficulty in trusting her.

It surprised me to learn this episode was written by Al Jean. As someone who has been with The Simpsons since the beginning, he'd know better about important bits of canon like this.

Story doesn't make sense
martinjeff-7067629 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The story doesn't make sense since Homer knows his mother is alive. We found that out in season 7 episode 8. In this episode Homer has a flashback on finding his mother at the age of 16. In season 7 he doesn't know his mother is still alive until he is an adult.

THIS EPISODES CONTRADICTS EPISDODE 7 SEASON 9
laumenel29 November 2021
Dear Disney stop changing the characters histories. Homer found out his mother was alive in his 30 no in the adolescence.

You contradict cannon history to make a doll chapter with bad jokes. Shame on you.

Shame on you.

PLEAS END THE SERIE NOW LET THE SIMPSON REST IN PEACE.

Never break canon
exuberantloquacity19 March 2022
As most other reviewers have written, this contradicts an early eposide about Homer's mother. It was a classic, too, which makes it even worse to go against it now. The Simpsons has been going too long. If it's got to the point they're going to start breaking canon and rectonning it, it's time to throw in the towel. One episode contradicting a previous one unravels the whole story. Sad.

Very Disappointing
ken-8669630 November 2021
After some of the better episodes of the whole series, they dump this piece of junk on us. The story made no sense since it didn't align with what was already brought up in prior episodes.

I think even the creators knew this was a stinker and that is why they put a Mother's Day episode on the weekend of Thanksgiving.

A pirate ship blew up Canon with Cannon
mayahermeskali19 August 2022
Worst mothers day ever. They could have wrote a beautiful story aligned with the rest of the Mona Simpsons story, bit chose to rewrite an entire story. Season 33 went from an amazing Fargo parody to a "blarg, oh! Let's Mess with a story that is loved and heartfelt". Worst mothers day ever...

could be the worst episode ever
dean70117 December 2021
As stated by other reviewers, the story of Homer's mother was already told and this goes against that entirely. It could be time to pack up the franchise.

Another terrible episode I consider non-canon with one redeeming moment
eatarver30 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't care what Disney and Al Jean wrote, Mother Simpsons has and always will be canon. Okay, now to my opinion of this stupid plot. Mona isn't stupid enough to send her son a postcard to her son with her name and current location; the writer based her intelligence as an answer to their question on what side did Lisa get her intelligence from. She is also supposed to be on the run from the law, and she acted accordingly to her circumstances such as having multiple fake ideas and not asking her to visit her. So guess what the result of this asinine move? The FEDs followed Homer and Abe leading them to her. At the end I felt that Mona was purposefully wasting Homer's time, because she ended up running again.

The only redeemable parts of this episode is that for once Abe is receiving more love from Homer than Mona (by going back and saving father rather than possibly catching the hippie bus to reunite with his mother), which it's about time he showed some love to his father. Abe was abusive and he puts Homer down, but he also sacrificed way more than Mona can dream of. He gave up his second marriage to this glamorous looking chick to be there for the injured Homer and he sold his house so Homer and Marge can buy their current house (he also gave all his money to the newly wed Homer and Marge but I consider this a retcon to from the glorious episode I Married Marge, where Homer was struggling when he got married to Marge). Mona, on the other hand, cared more about her identity as a hippie and put Homer on the back burner. So thank you Jean and Disney for showing Abe some love.

I was bored
charlotore29 November 2021
Okay the story wasn't that bad or uninteresting, but it's just...an uneventful episode for me, nothing exciting and there was barely anything funny (aside for Mona leaving her message on the liquor bottles lol). And I loved the bits with the therapist scamming people (having to pay up every once in a while plus the Toyota ad coming up) was funny, but Homer finding his mom just so she can escape again because FBI was there for a reason I personally don't understand (maybe I missed the episodes with more backstories about Mona) was just plain pathetic and like...okay, next segment...

Disappointing to say the least...
redemptions_love12 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't mind Modern Simpson's episodes for the most part, and a some have been brilliant, however... the writers NEED to stop contradicting and ignoring the extremely important character development that happened in earlier seasons of The Simpson's! These are they times that I do feel extremely frustrated and upset by modern Simpson's episodes.

I have no issue with the modern episodes generally being portrayed alongside modern day times and current technology. To me that just makes sense. Series that run as long as The Simpson's need to naturally evolve with the times and be approachable to new generations as well.

However! There is no need to neglect and contradict incredibly profound character development and storyline in earlier seasons. Writers can certainly build off those developments, that's fine, but they do NOT need to change the specific facts of those past and important developments, such as Homer only finding out when he was 39 years old, that his mother was infact alive. The original episode Mother Simpson, is one of the most beloved and praised Simpson's episodes of all time. To contradict that original episode is honestly a real disservice to the series, and a betrayal to the majority of Simpson's fans out there.

Because of the above, I found it very challenging to like this episode. For me there were some good redeeming aspects though - the music score was beautiful, the dark humour weaved through the very real portrayal of how corrupt and genuinely unqualified people are behind app's like Betterhelp was great, and also the amusing segments regarding Muttflix the premium cable channel for dogs. But in my opinion, these genuinely good aspects are sadly not enough to redeem and save this episode.

I truly hope that the writers will just STOP with the contradictions of earlier, profound character and story development in earlier seasons. Build off from it, sure. But don't contradict or ignore it.

Edit: Although I still stand by my statements above, I wish to add two other things about this episode that had quality. Even though I hate the original canon being written over and think it will always remain to be completely unnecessary, the new story at least portrayed a good emotionality and vulnerability by the characters (but the original Mother Simpson had this too, and more so, in my opinion.) Also, I've the reflected on the scene in which Homer chose to stay with Abe. Abe was an abusive and neglectful father to young Homer, there's no denying that throughout Simpson history. However, he never made the conscious choice to literally abandon Homer for a different life. Homer was at such a young age of crucial development when Mona chose to risk physically abandoning him forever (I don't know if anyone has considered that the trauma really did cause developmental arrest and stunting in him that he lives with unknowningly as an adult character.) So I do give credit to Homer's family dynamic being highlighted in this way in the episode.

Patch for the contradiction
santifersan8 February 2024
If we imagine that Mother and Other Strangers happens chronologically before the episode where Homer reunites with his mother for the first time, in a way the contradiction can be rectified. However, I must emphasize that these types of things exemplify that Disney only produces the series for mere economic interest, neglecting the creative aspect of the program. Now the episodes feel like something trivial that doesn't make sense, added to other flaws that I won't mention since I receive negative votes when I talk about them. I'm only writing this review to have a backup of my patch for the contradiction.
