For all the kismet surrounding the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, even the producers weren’t quite sure having both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same date was a good idea.
Margot Robbie, who as a producer on “Barbie” also got a juicy payday, revealed in a conversation with “Oppenheimer” star Cillian Murphy that a producer on Christopher Nolan’s film actually called her asking them to move “Barbie” off of the “Oppenheimer” release date. She didn’t budge.
“He was like, ‘I think you guys should move your date.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not moving our date. If you’re scared to be up against us, then you move your date.’ And he’s like, ‘We’re not moving our date. I just think it’d be better for you to move.’ And I was like, ‘We’re not moving,’” she said on Variety’s Actors on Actors video series.

“Deep Dive” is an in-depth podcast and video essay series featuring interviews with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this edition, the IndieWire Crafts and Special Projects team partnered with Warner Bros. to take a closer look at “Barbie” with director and co-writer Greta Gerwig and nine members of her creative team who breathed life into the iconic Mattel doll.
The tagline “Barbie is everything” turns out to be pretty apt. “Barbie” contains within it multiple kinds of high-concept comedy, musicals, action sequences, mother-daughter stories, and a liminal void wherein Barbie (Margot Robbie) can meet her maker, Ruth Handler (Rhea Pearlman), and elect to transcend toyhood to become a human woman. All in less than two hours!
That “Barbie” contains so much and accomplishes so much — stylistically, tonally, and emotionally — is a huge credit to co-writer and director Greta Gerwig and her creative team,...

Marvel has finally unveiled its latest tentpole, “The Marvels,” and film journalists are calling the Nia DaCosta-directed tentpole a “short and sweet,” “astonishingly wacky” film that’s “full of girl power.”
Although many have been hesitant about the superhero movie’s potential, with a few already predicting “The Marvels” as a box office bomb — a surprising number of positive reactions poured in on social media Tuesday night. Washington Post reporter Herb Scribner described the film as “exactly what a comic book movie should be,” while “Deep Dive” host Erik Voss called it “astonishingly wacky.”
“It’s funny, silly, short and sweet, action-packed. Loved the cosmic sci-fi moments,” Scribner wrote on X/Twitter. “Plenty of MCU interconnectivity without being overbearing.”
My early #TheMarvels review —
—Yes. So much yes.
—This film is so much fun and exactly what a comic book movie should be. It’s funny, silly, short and sweet, action-packed.

“Deep Dive” is an in-depth podcast and video essay series featuring interviews with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this spring edition, the IndieWire Crafts and Special Projects team partnered with Showtime to take a closer look at “George & Tammy” with creator/showrunner Abe Sylvia, stars Jessica Chastain and Michael Shannon, director John Hillcoat, and eight more behind-the-scenes artists who brought to life the story of country legends George Jones and Tammy Wynette.
Showtime’s “George & Tammy” is a powerful and profound examination of show business romance, a heartbreaking but exhilaratingly entertaining portrait of the passionate but troubled relationship between George Jones and Tammy Wynette. As the King and Queen of Country Music, Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain capture the essence of the country music icons without imitating them; these are performances built from the inside out that allow the audience to...

“Deep Dive” is a in-depth podcast and video essay series with the stars and creative team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this winter edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with Prime Video to take a closer look at the first season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” with showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, stars Morfydd Clark, Sophia Nomvete, and Charlie Vickers, and eight key members of the creative team behind the series.
“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” truly embraces both halves of its “based on ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and appendices by J.R.R. Tolkien” credit. Lots of people know “The Lord of the Rings”: “The Fellowship of the Ring,” “The Two Towers,” and “The Return of the King” have sold millions of copies and were later adapted by Peter Jackson into a box-office-conquering, Oscar-hoarding series of feature films.

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alum Dana Wilkey is backpedaling after rookie cast member Diana Jenkins sent her a cease and desist letter alleging she had spread false rumors about her.
Dana removed two episodes of her podcast Dishing Drama, titled Deep Dive on Sanela Diana Jenkins with Enty part 1 and 2, which included a string of claims made against Bosnian native.
In one claim, it was alleged she had affairs with both Justin Timberlake and Madonna’s ex-husband, Guy Ritchie. Another alleged that the Sunela Foundation creator was a “madame” who sex-trafficked women.
The episodes aired in May, but Page Six reported that Dana only received her cease and desist letter on August 31.

For this spring edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with HBO Max to take a closer look at the limited series ”Station Eleven” with creator Patrick Somerville, star Mackenzie Davis, and nine key members of the creative team behind the series finale “Unbroken Circle.”
Endings are hard for any television show, but at times the odds of “Station Eleven” pulling off a satisfying conclusion seemed about as low as, well, surviving a global pandemic that wipes out 99 percent of the world’s population. There is an episodic nature to the series: Instead of stringing out one single story over 10 hours, creator Patrick Somerville and team explore the lives of a far-flung ensemble impacted by a deadly flu virus. “Station Eleven” skips freely through time, from the first hours...

“Deep Dive” is a in-depth podcast and video essay series with the stars, creators and crafts team behind an exceptional piece of filmmaking. For this edition, the IndieWire Crafts team partnered with HBO to take a closer look at the limited series “Watchmen,” and interviewed creator Damon Lindelof, and 10 members of his creative team to go behind the scenes of Episode 6, “This Extraordinary Being.”
“What is Hooded Justice’s origin story?” It was the question showrunner Damon Lindelof asked his “Watchmen” writers room early on in their reinvention of Alan Moore’s groundbreaking graphic novel. The answer to this question would become the basis of Episode 6 of “Watchmen,” “This Extraordinary Being,” one of the most formally bold 60 minutes of television ever made.
“For an episode like this to work,” Lindelof told IndieWire, “you need so many brilliant minds coming together and at any one time different people are taking the reins and steering the carriage.
