Exclusive: Anonymous Content, Red Bull Studios and Rise Films have partnered to produce new documentary feature The Balloonists following Swiss explorer Bertrand Piccard and English balloonist Brian Jones. BAFTA and Emmy-nominated documentary filmmaker John Dower has come aboard to direct the project and Anonymous Content’s AC Independent will oversee sales.
The Balloonists follows the unlikely duo of Swiss explorer Piccard and British flying instructor Jones who, in 1999, took on the world’s leading aeronauts and ultra-rich adventurers in a race to become the first people to fly nonstop around the world in a hot air balloon. Many in the aviation community believed this to be an impossible feat, after years of failed attempts by balloonists from across the globe. More than most racing sports, ballooning is subject to the capricious whims of nature. An aeronaut must learn to accept the unexpected and respect their position in the hierarchy of the natural world,...

Vicky Krieps, best performance prize winner in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard for “Corsage,” will star as Sophie Toscan du Plantier in six time-Oscar nominee Jim Sheridan and David Merriman’s “Re-creation,” which is being presented in the Venice Gap-Financing Market.
The docu-drama, which centers on the brutal murder in 1996 in Ireland of French film and TV producer Toscan du Plantier, has been co-written and will be co-directed by Sheridan, best known for “My Left Foot” and “In the Name of the Father,” and Merriman. The unsolved crime was previously the subject of Sheridan’s documentary series “Murder at the Cottage.”
Krieps garnered widespread acclaim with her breakthrough performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread” in 2017. As well as the Cannes prize, her performance in last year’s “Corsage” also won her the European Film Award for best European actress.
Jim Sheridan walks the red carpet for “The Secret Scripture” during the Rome Film Festival.

“Loki” is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, so the fact that it was a viewership success every time a new episode dropped is unlikely to surprise anyone. What might turn heads, however, is just how popular “Loki” was compared to every other streaming television show on the market during the Disney+ show’s release window.
The latest Nielsen report on viewership for streaming television shows stated that “Loki” was viewed for 813 million minutes from June 28 to July 4, making it the most-viewed show of the week by a considerable margin despite having only premiered 4 episodes at that time. Amazon Prime Video’s “Bosch,” which boasts 64 episodes, was the second most-viewed show of that week, with 490 million viewing minutes.
“WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” the two Disney+ Marvel Cinematic Universe shows that premiered earlier in the year, also enjoyed strong ratings, but “Loki” is poised to surpass both.

A documentary about the relationship between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali from Kenya Barris and his Khalabo Ink Society has been set at Netflix.
Blood Brothers: Malcolm X & Muhammad Ali will launch on the streamer on September 9.
Based on Randy Roberts and Johnny Smith’s book Blood Brothers: The Fatal Friendship Between Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X, the feature doc comes from Barris’ previous overall deal with the streamer. He has since moved to ViacomCBS in a deal that gives him equity in BET Studios. It is the Black-ish creator’s latest doc for the streamer – he is also producing a doc on civil rights attorney Ben Crump.
The film, which Barris teased in a New York Times profile last year, features never before seen archival footage and the story behind the friendship between the civil rights leader and the boxing legend.

Netflix's latest true-crime docuseries, Sophie: A Murder in West Cork, transports us to a quiet little village in Ireland that's been haunted by a murder for over two decades. On Dec. 23, 1996, a 39-year-old French woman named Sophie Toscan du Plantier was found dead outside of her holiday home in West Cork, a place that otherwise had a reputation for its welcoming attitude toward foreigners. Toscan du Plantier suffered from blunt-force trauma, specifically severe head wounds that left her unrecognizable. So, who killed Sophie Toscan du Plantier in West Cork? After all of these years, there's really only been one lingering murder suspect: Ian Bailey.
What Happened to Sophie Toscan du Plantier?
Toscan du Plantier was an established documentary producer married to Daniel Toscan du Plantier, another renowned producer in French cinema. Though associated with the social elite, Toscan du Plantier enjoyed time alone, settling briefly at her holiday home...

Sophie: A Murder in West Cork is a three-part series that examines one of the most famous murders to ever occur in Ireland. Based on a true story, the crime documentary follows the life of French documentary producer Sophie Toscan du Plantier, who died in West Cork in 1996. Featuring contributions from du Plantier's family, including her parents, her son, and her uncle, the documentary aims to offer a unique window into the ongoing battle to find justice for Sophie.
Suzanne Lavery, the documentary's executive producer, said that "in making this documentary we wanted to honor Sophie, her family and that rural community in the West of Ireland. Even now, I find it genuinely astonishing that something so terrible could have happened not just to a woman who appeared to have such a gilded life but in such a beautiful place and to a community that prided itself on its peacefulness,...
