- A ruthless drug dealer with a background as a lawyer proves a difficult target for the team. Jaimie is on point for the case, which gives her fellow team members the chance to learn some bits and pieces about her real past.
- Slick mob lawyer Howard has started dealing himself. Dean tries entrapment, but his all too perfect cover makes the fiend wake out and execute the henchman who 'failed to do his screening homework thoroughly'. When rookie Jamie comes up with the alternative plan to work on Howard's quality control chemist Reuben Pike, Carter allow her to take the lead. Dean advised against it but saves her butt, thus finds out about her dirty past, yet covers for her after her cover, as Ruben's partner, requires relapsing into cocaine use.—KGF Vissers

A guy pulls up in a snazzy sports car to happening club. As he walks past the bar, Ty exposits via radio that "Howard" has arrived with money. Howard heads upstairs, watched on video by Carter who radios everyone that once the buy is done they've got him.
Dean is set up as the seller with bag full of drugs. But Howard, a former defense attorney, is suspicious of Dean's cover not having been able to turn up much information on him since all the people he's supposedly worked with are dead. Dean starts the whole "you think I'm a cop?" routine. Watching on video Jamie wants to "take him." But Carter points out if there's no money in case, there's no intent to buy. They prep for things going bad. Dean asks his associate in Howard's employ to vouch for him and he does but that's not enough, Howard changes his mind. Dean calls him paranoid. They let him leave since Carter hopes they get him some other way.
Back at HQ, Dean thinks they should've taken him. Carter says Dean's cover isn't blown and he should go grovel and get back inside.
The next day Jamie is kissing a suited-up man goodbye at home. (She's in her undies and at one point grabs her gun which the man thinks is hot). The man broaches the topic of living together. She's unsure since it's only been three months. He tells her to think about it. (He's a lawyer.)
Dean shows up at the house of his Howard contact Brian, only to find Brian dead on the floor.
Back at HQ, Carter wants to have him go back in. Jamie suggests a better way to do it would be through another Howard lackey Ruben Pike. He's a former pharmaceutical engineer, not a hardcore criminal. She thinks they can use him to trade up for something bigger. Carter likes it. Jamie wants to be on point since it was her lead. Dean objects to this saying she's never done it before. Carter pulls her aside and says he's not wild about putting her on drug case, can she handle it? She says she can. She's on point. And happy about it. Dean? Not so much.
As she wires up in the car with Carter and Dean to meet with Ruben, Dean counsels her on the do's and don'ts of staying alive. Jamie is sure about her approach.
She meets him in twelve step meeting. She claims she just moved to L.A. two weeks ago and relates to Ruben's share. She chats with him after and concocts a story about running away at 16, and having to lie, cheat, and steal to get by and get high. She was once so high, she says, she drove through a store window. His rock bottom came smoking crack in the bathroom at his nephew's christening. His wife left him, he lost his job and house and is in debt to his dealer, Howard. Jamie goes to leave. He offers a ride but she says she likes taking the bus. She promises to call him.
Back in the car Cap'n Maynard calls Carter and he leaves. Jamie gripes that Carter is not grateful enough for her work. Dean says it doesn't work that way and wonders how much of the story she told is true. She says none of it.
Maynard wants to know why they don't have Howard yet. Carter says they didn't go deep enough and he's too connected from days as a defense attorney. Maynard says he's also a big political contributor and for Carter to move on. Carter asks for, and receives, a two day reprieve.
Dean and Jamie tail Ruben. They watch him fight with his ex-wife on the street. Jamie thinks he's needy which is good since he'll be attracted to other needy people.
Ruben arrives at "Jamie's house," which is wrecked. She clams she doesn't want to involve him and explains that it's her her ex-boyfriend, a dealer in Denver. She stole money from him to move and he want it back. 12k. She wants to set up a buy with his dealer and they can split it 50-50 and he can get out of debt too and show his ex-wife he's doing better. He claims he's trying to get away from tthat life but seems to agree. . After he leaves, Dean pops out of the bathroom approvingly.
Ty will pose as the dealer and he and Carter work on getting stuff into various databases for when Howard checks up on his cover. Dean informs them they'll need 10 kilos. Dean voices suspcions about Jamie and says to dump her. Carter says she has something special and for Dean to stay with her.
Ty, posing as the dealer Trey, meets with Ruben and Jamie. Ruben, the former pharma engineer, tests out the purity of the drugs with a fancy test tube and computer test and it's only 41% pure, too low grade for Howard. Ty pulls a nutty to save face. After he leaves, a shaken Ruben tells Jamie this is what he was trying to get away from.
Back at HQ Jamie tells Carter she can make it work. He yells at her to show him and says she has one day and then is off the case and leaves. Dean says Carter is playing her because of her daddy issues. He asks why she thinks Carter picked her. She claims she's a better liar than Dean. She pulls out some drugs and asks for some kind of help.
She meets Ruben at meeting again and apologizes,.asks for a truce. She says she's going to sell some jewelry, and asks for a ride to pawn shop. As they leave Dean rides up as himself, a cop, and puts 'em up against Ruben's car. Dean makes him open the trunk, where he and Jamie have planted a kilo planted. Jamie comes out as a cop.
They threaten him with 25 years unless he sets up a buy with Howard. He howls entrapment but they point out that Howard killed Brian when he thought he didn't vet someone properly, how will he feel when they know Ruben has actually met with the cops? Jamie says t's a chance to help himself and threatens him with a perp walk in front of his ex-wife. He is furious and disgusted with Jamie but agrees.
Carter is mad but Jamie and Dean claim the arrest was clean. They hatch a plan: Ty will have an ironclad cover, Ruben will test the drugs and say they're better than they are, they will arrest Howard. Carter's pleased and says to make it happen.
Carter and Ty meet with a con to convince him to lie to prop up Ty's cover in exchange for getting his brother into the same prison with him.
Back at HQ Jamie asks Ruben to rig the computer purity test. He will. He wants to see his ex-wife in case something happens. He remains angry at Jamie for not being ashamed of lying. She walks away. Dean says to not let it get to her, it's part of deal.
She goes home, brooding. She snaps at her boyfriend after he makes seemingly innocent conversation about her lack of family pictures. She wonders if he's interrogating her since she said she wouldn't move in right away. They fight and then she gets the call about Howard and says she has to go and they'll talk later. He says there's no need and leaves.
Back at HQ they learn that Howard wants to meet Jamie, an audition of sorts. Trouble is, they have no cover for her that will hold up under Howard's scrutiny. Carter tells her to use her real name and that her real backstory will work. Dean wonders what this means.
She goes to Howard's house with Ruben. Ruben claims the drugs she's offering are 77 percent pure and gets Ty's cover name, Trey Norton, and tells his lackeys to run it. He tells Ruben to leave. He starts asking Jamie about her wild days in Detroit. Dean messages her that he's following Ruben being driven home in case they try to kill him. Howard puts out lines of coke for Jamie to do. She demurs, says it's not her thing anymore. He tells her to do it for nostalgia's sake. She says she doesn't need it. He says she does and essentially makes it clear that she has to party with him to make the deal go down.
The next morning she calls Dean. He rushes to pick her up. He finds her huddled in an alley near a crashed car. He takes her to his house where an EMT buddy checks her over and says she's no amateur.
Dean confronts her and Jamie says it was the only way to make Howard meet with Ty. Dean asks about the backstory she told Ruben. She admits it's all true, that she changed her name from Jamie Anderson to Jamie Allen before she joined the force. She says Dean would've done the same. She asks him not to tell Carter about her wild night. He wonders what her real truth is. She says the truth is she likes being a cop, it's all she has and Carter threatened to dump her if she lied to him. Still and all, Dean says they have to tell.
Dean goes to Carter and lets him know he knows Jamie's backstory and is that he put Ty and himself in danger but not telling them about her. Carter says Jamie is talented. Dean argues that shes' not talented but bent and would do anything for Carter which is why he likes her. Jamie enters, Howard ageed to meet Trey at 5. Dean doesn't tell on Jamie. Carter tells her to get Ruben ready.
Jamie allows him to go see his ex-wife first to come clean about everything.
Jamie tells Carter the truth about entrapping Ruben. Carter is mad she lied to him and tells her to take Ruben to a lawyer to state on tape that his involvement is voluntary.
At the buy Howard interviews Ty about his backstory and his time in Chino. He says a con there knew Ty and said he was a stand up con. Trey's all, yeah, yeah, yeah, let's do business. Howard agrees, once his quality control guy arrives. Ruben arrives wired and ready to do the test. Carter reminds him to make sure he sees the money first.
We cut to test and Ruben's claim of 77% purity. Howard sends a guy off for the money then gets a call. It's Ruben's lawyer, who Ruben forgot Howard set him up with. He grabs Ruben and yells at Ty that he's setting them up and to kill him. Carter, Dean, and Jamie bust in. They nab Howard but Ruben is dead. Jamie is sad
Outside Carter says it's his fault since he could've/should've stopped the play but he wanted Howard. Jamie asks him what he needs her for. For who she is, not who she was or who she pretends to be he says. He tells her she did good and tomorrow she'll do better. Dean glares at him. Jamie walks away.
At home she calls her boyfriend and gets his voicemail. There's a knock and she perks up, clearly hopeful it's him. It's Dean, who thought she might have trouble winding down. He brought a bottle. As they drink he tells her to shake Ruben off, not forget but put it in a box and file it away because she'll have time to look at it later. He tells her Carter is just rigid and would be crazy if he knew he came over. Jamie says they won't tell him. She take a swig, turns up the music and does a little dance for Dean. He looks perplexed.
