Titans rushes to the finish line with a finale that lacks tension and real emotion, but it's still great and has plenty of action and memorable character interactions
"Purple Rain" is the season finale for Titans third season, it has Jonathan Crane executing his true plan and it's both big and smart, a true Scarecrow plan. A. R. G. U. S. Agents led by Vee rescue Barbara. Joined by Tim, the Titans reunite. After detonating one explosive, Crane threatens to set off the other bombs if the heroes are unable to solve his clues. With all the build up from past episodes, Episode 3.13 is a memorable finale that ties up multiple of storylines in a good way. There's a lot of things happening in this episode, good things at that. Richard Hatem & Greg Walker penned the script for this episode and it's overall quite good, but far from the best script of the season and there's some bad writing in there, mostly in how there should have been one more episode. There's also a couple of plot holes and things that doesn't make that much sense, but it's easy to look past them. The characters feel like themselves which is a plus. Each Titan get their moment to shine which is nice to see. There's also plenty of great character interactions and acting in the episode. Regarding the pacing, it was good and was nicely edited with good transitions.
The Emmy award winner and director of the show "Bones" and other television series, Chad Lowe is perfect for Titans and his direction and vision makes it show. There were also some truly amazing cinematography and imagery. The whole episode looked fantastic as the show usually does. Production and art design were great, the musical score and sound design needs praise. Visual effects were finally something that you can call impressive.
"Purple Rain" was overall a good episode and the best season finale Titans have given us. But it felt rushed, skipping character interactions and emotional moments to move the story along. It can be seen as both good and bad, depending on how you look at it. Realistically, when you're in a situation when a villain or terrorist is bombing a city, seeing someone you love coming back from death would have to wait. But seeing Dick Grayson interact more with Donna Troy is something I personally wanted to see and it's something us fans deserve. I see why they did it that way as it would have only hurt the pacing. The action sequences were top notch in this episode, the choreography and so on. Nightwing and Red Hood being the two who had the best action sequences. The season finale was far from what I expected it would be and it didn't really meet my expectations, but it was still pretty good. I found the episode to lack any real tension and unpredictable events, the showrunners played it off too safe. But it's understandable after the fiasco that was the season 2 finale. Vincent Kartheiser's portrayal as Dr. Jonathan Crane was terrific and I loved the character, I never expected the villain to work for the Titans but he did. Jonathan Crane, Red Hood and Blackfire was all great storylines that moved the plot forward and gave the main characters important and fantastic character development.
In my opinion, season 3 was great but it has its flaws which started to show in the second half of the season. But overall a fantastic season with lots of things to like, from acting to action, Titans brought us another memorable villain and interesting characters.
