Best Movie Based on the One Piece Manga
lolbleachfan31 August 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Let me begin by saying that One Piece is one of my favourite manga (Japanese comic book, for people who don't know.) of all time. I only got into the manga after this movie was released so I can't exactly say I was "hyped as hell" but if I had gotten into it earlier then there would be no doubt I'd be foaming out the mouth in anticipation.

So what makes this one One Piece movie stand out from the rest? One simple reason. The script was written by series creator, Eiichiro Oda, to coincide with the manga's 10th anniversary and as such it is the only One Piece movie so far to be official canon.

Anyway, onto the movie itself. The plot takes place sometime after the Straw Hats pirate crew left Thriller Bark but before arriving at Sabaody Archipelgo just so you get an idea of when is the best time to watch this movie if you're reading the manga. The crew meet Shiki, a former rival to the King of the Pirates and has the ability to make anything float and manipulate them with the exception of living things other than himself. Impressed with Nami's navigation skills, he kidnaps her to become part of his crew and sends the rest of the crew separated in his floating kingdom. The crew need to get back together, rescue Nami and show Shiki just what happens when you mess with the Straw Hats.

The first thing anyone will notice is how the film looks and let me tell you that it looks fantastic. And I'm not even talking about just the animation. Shiki's kingdom is just pure eye candy. All the different islands have unique looks and locations to them, some of which we only see for a few brief minutes. The attention to detail is stunning. I could talk about the jungle ruins or the frozen wasteland or Shiki's palace and all the little things in them for a while. In addition to that, Oda designed several amazing fantasy creatures like the eel shark, the snake necked giraffe, the long armed wrestling bear and so on. Much like of the locations, many of them just have brief appearances usually in the background. It all goes to show just what a creative mind Oda has.

If I was to talk about the characters, well, I would have to talk about the manga which I'm not going to. If you have the read the manga and are familiar with the main characters then you'll be pleased to hear they and their wild personalities have all been carried over perfectly and they each get piece of the action and if you have not read the manga, then what is wrong with you? Go read it. Now. As for the characters made just for the movie, they are what you would expect from typical One Piece villains. Goofy and hammy but still legitimate threats and, hey, that's why I like them. Shiki has his share of silly and cool moments and his two main henchmen, Indigo the mad clown scientist and Scarlet the perverted gorilla, are just so over-the-top that it's hard not to laugh.

However, like all movies, it has some faults. Namely that I thought certain crew members like Franky, Brook and Robin do not get enough action as though the rest of the crew's scenes were all thought out and the rest were quickly put together just so everyone gets at least a little bit of screen time which really sucks for me since Franky and Brook are my two favourite characters but this is just a minor complaint. They still do stuff important to the plot, get some funny lines in here and there and them having a few minutes of fighting is better than no fighting at all.

Overall, if you're a fan of One Piece then you owe it to yourself to see this movie. Even if you're not, I feel as though some non-fans could get a kick out of it. A perfect blend of action, comedy and drama.

Strong Debut
zhyates19 December 2021
For the first of the "modern" One Piece films, "Strong" is a good adjective. The emphasis on the stakes is perhaps too burdening for the film, as a lot of exposition is used to constantly weigh down the less serious tone the rest of the film conveys. The antagonist troupe tends to be more jovial and less sinister, which is to the detriment of the antagonist given his agenda and what he does to tie the Straw Hat crew to the film's events.

A lot of this film seems to be set more around getting specific art piece setups rather than making a cohesive film, but it's very fun when it wants to be, and perhaps too serious when it swings back the other way. Still a definite watch.

Pure entertainment.
shabanavdulaj16 September 2019
This is the best movie coming from a shounen anime. I am not a fan of One Piece. I watched this movie 5 or 6 years back and I loved it. I become obsessed with this characters and their powers and this gorgeous world. After watching this movie I started the series, skipping the filler episodes. The series is not as good as this movie but you can get some entertainment out of it as long as you skip the filler. Now back to this movie. The world here is just breathtaking. The visuals are amazing with the vibrant colors and all. I love the enormous creatures, the big trees and the floating islands. The characters are not that dull as in the series when they only laugh about stupid stuff. They are written preatty good for a shounen movie. Overall this movie is a spectacular piece of animation that I really enjoy and appreciate it.

By far the best One Piece film
dokkelly-120-94327012 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
the is really the best, don't get me wrong i enjoyed the others but this one truly takes the cake!First of all let me get this out of the way the animation is beautiful, especially on the animals and on the facial expressions.Sometimes just by looking at a characters face you can tell exactly what they're thinking. But i truly like it for the plot and characters(especially Nami who really shined in this one)what i mean is the way the characters personalities are portrayed, like for example when Luffy got that message from Nami he true a fit simply because she says they can't beat Shiki.Another example is the scene where Nami was to chose between selling her mind and body to Shiki or see her hometown perish.Again you could tell exactly what she was thinking.not to mention the plot is very original and thought provoking, not to mention by the way the others where original too,but the problem with them was the plot rarely focused completely on the straw-hats.Where as here it has everything to do with them.Bottom line those are the main reason why this one is my personal favourite.10/10

Another great One Piece adventure
langsts2131 December 2010
Warning: Spoilers
Shiki, the only pirate to escape from the underwater prison Impel Down is the main antagonist of the movie. What does Shiki do when Nami warns him of a dangerous storm that his advanced navigation equipment can't sense? The jerk makes the Straw Hats' ship fly into the sky, kidnaps Nami to keep as a navigator, and drops the Straw Hat Pirates and their ship from the air onto an island inhabited by violent rampaging mutated animals! Big mistake. In order to save Nami, they have to defeat Shiki, his crew, and hundreds of pirates that are also under his command, and save the entire East Blue from being destroyed. Viewers can expect great action and comedy like the television series. The mutated animals are very creative and his two major crew members are creative as well. One of the crew members is a scientist that resembles a clown and an actual gorilla that wears clothes.

Strong World adding a lot of time to the story
Mysterygeneration13 January 2024
The story is great, with the Strong World adding a lot of time to the story. The art is great, with some strange elements like Franky's hair with a banana and Brook smoking. The sound is great, but not unexpected. The characters are original, with Luffy's crew having a 10 out of 10 rating. Shiki is an outstanding character, and the characters are well-developed. The movie is a great addition to the One Piece arc, and if you enjoy the anime, you won't be disappointed. The key is not to overrate it, as the story moves fast and the art is great. Overall, if you enjoy One Piece and don't expect much from this movie, you'll love it and even give it a 10.

Sensational Villain and Story
efee_puiyi25 January 2022
Another wonderful One Piece Movie, Strong World is worse than the other three movies (Z, Gold, Stampede) but it's still amazing tho. It's in the fourth place to my opinion.

Still it has special place for me maybe for everbody because it's the last pre-time skip movie of One Piece.

As a story it's really great, has some strange characters and lastly of course the villain.

Frankly I didn't like how the producers represent the main villain because he looks like stronger than Luffy, actually he is. Anyways, There is no problem other than that. If you are a One Piece fan, of course you would be happy at the end of the movie if you're not I still think that you'll enjoy.

Thank you for reading, I hope I could have helped you with this review.

Second Favorite Film
electrovator30 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was amazing, to me it felt more like watching an entire Arc from the show rather than watching a movie, which is one of the reasons I loved it so much. I loved the bad guy and especially how Luffy defeated him.

Although I loved the film for some reason I found it a little long (don't know why) but nevertheless it was an incredible One Piece Film. (my favorite is still Film Z though)

I also love how the film took place in the sky, and it had nothing to do with Skypiea either.

I highly suggest watching this one
