When bacteria die within the human body they may release endotoxins that are as dangerous as the exotoxins they release while alive. So it is critical that drugs and medical implants are free of bacteria. But testing for endotoxins is cumbersome except with horseshoe crab blood which immediately clots in the presence of the toxins.—David Foss
