Things have been almost frighteningly quiet at this year’s MIPTV international television market, which runs through Wednesday in Cannes, but a trickle of deal announcements suggests that while cutbacks and cost-cutting may be the order of the day, some business is still being done.
French giant Studiocanal on Tuesday unveiled a flurry of territory sales for two new Belgium thrillers, The Crash and 1985, both based on real-life events, that are part of the company’s MIPTV slate.
The Crash is a dramatization of the 1992 airline disaster, in which El Al Flight 1862 to Tel Aviv crashed into two jam-packed residential high-rises in the suburbs of Amsterdam. 1985 tells the story of Belgium’s most notorious, unsolved crime spree involving a series of violent attacks, believed to be carried out by three men, which resulted in the death of 28 people.

Has it really been 14 years since Casper Van Dien and Patrick Muldoon fought for the heart of Denise Richards in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers? Well, they are together again flying the not-so friendly skies in Fred Olen Ray’s Turbulent Skies, which hits DVD on June 21, 2011 from Anchor Bay.
After pilot error causes a devastating airline crash, Devain Industries unveils the CD70 — a revolutionary automated system invented by Tom Woodard (Casper Van Dien) and his wife Samantha (Nicole Eggert of ”Baywatch”) designed to someday make human pilots obsolete. But when reckless playboy Charles Devain (Patrick Muldoon of Starship Troopers and ”Melrose Place”) and his billionaire father (Brad Dourif of Halloween and ”Deadwood”) insist on using the prototype for a celebratory VIP flight from Los Angeles to New York City, a computer virus triggers a terrifying chain of events: The 747 goes off-course during a lightning storm. Their communication systems are dead.

There’s something about disaster movies that make them fun, no matter how cheesy, and here’s the latest. Anchor Bay will release the airborne thriller Turbulent Skies on DVD on July 26.
Casper Van Dien looks good -- before looking up! -- in Turbulent Skies.
In the film, everything appears to be fine on a fully loaded 747 jet airliner that’s equipped with a revolutionary automated piloting system, until the plane veers off course … directly into the path of a huge storm! When the airplane heads for a large city and the Secretary of Defense authorizes the military to shoot the it out of the air, it’s up to the system’s inventor and his team to avert the disaster.
Turbulent Skies is a DVD premiere movie that sports all the appropriate straight-to-dvd credits: The film is directed and co-written by Fred Olen Ray (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers) and stars...

You would think Bigfoot battling a Chupacabra would be a bit of a mismatch given the incredible size difference between the two. Fred Olen Ray is nonetheless readying a David vs. Goliath clash between these two cryptid titans. Sasquatch vs. Chupacabra - place your bets!
Fred Olen Ray has just announced plans for the flick on his Retromedia message board, and an official Sasquatch vs. Chupacabra website is already online.
There's nothing on the website other than a "contact us" link and the following:
From director Fred Olen Ray (Sea Snakes, Turbulent Skies, The Lair) and producer Kimberly A. Ray (Woke Up Dead, Komodo Vs Cobra, Megaconda, Dante's Cove).
No other details at this time aside from the temporary artwork you see below. But it's Bigfoot grappling with a goatsucker; what more do you need?
