With this debut play, author Elaine Morgan won the 1955 television play competition "That One Talent" among over 1000 entries. In her memoirs, she describes her three narrative means to win: 1) The wild west set-up would be popular among the viewers, 2) anything Wildean would be popular among the literary judges and 3) the simple set-up in a log cabin would be popular to the producers. She immediately signed a contract for four more BBC plays to be written within the next year.
