Sex & Nudity

  • Gwen wears some skimpy outfits.
  • A lady mentions jokingly that Gwen looks like a "strung-out hooker".
  • Talk of pregnancy and a miscarriage; nothing too explicitly sexual, more sad than erotic at all.

Violence & Gore

  • Discussion of a plane crash that killed the subject of this series.
  • Brief discussion of spanking children.
  • One episode focuses on discipline practices promoted by the church which may be seen as child abuse by some and may be triggering to abuse survivors.
  • A lady recalls a father slamming his fist against his hand and telling her to "hit (his child) hard" if he misbehaves. When she refuses, the father apparently beats the boy and the lady recalls a screaming sound.

Profanity

  • At least one f bomb.
  • Some fat-shaming remarks and rude name-calling.
  • Multiple uses of "sh*t".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Some discussion of alcohol consumption and brief shots of bottles of champagne and wiskey.
  • mentions of street drugs and pharmaceuticals, including a lady taking prescribed antidepressants, but nothing shown on-screen.

  • The intro to one sequence in the latter season has Joe Lara staring into the camera directly, without blinking, for almost a full minute. It is quite disturbing and bizarre to watch.
  • A babysitter recalls being shaken when hearing an anchorman on the news reveal the death of a child she had been looking after.
  • There is talk of crime and scamming including child abuse, the selling of shoddy self-published books to rip people off, people starving themselves and other shocking things.
  • An elderly man is close to tears as he recalls how his wife left him for the church, and how he might lose his beloved homestead if she keeps trying to take his property in court.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A female child is dragged through the court system in a custody battle that lasted for the duration of the show. Her mother recalls fearing that the child had died in a plane crash, and breaks down sobbing on-camera.
  • Gwen's children are presented; one is apparently suffering from severe depression and uses drugs and sex to cope, eventually getting himself removed from the church's imagery, while the other, a daughter who ends up taking over the church, looks severely anorexic and skeleton-like. It is quite chilling and unsettling.
  • A woman discusses suicide. The telephone number for a suicide prevention hotline is later shown onscreen.
