The debut match of the West Coast Eagles, who were one of two interstate clubs to join the Victorian Football League that year (the other was the Brisbane Bears). They were the first new clubs to join the league since the expansion of 1925, and it was the first time that the VFL did not have twelve teams since 1943, when Geelong were unable to field a team due to the impact of the Second World War.
