I was captivated by Jordan Peele’s directorial debut, Get Out, until it devolved into over-the-top horror film fare, spoiling the social commentary. Apparently, I was not alone in this and Peele decided his sophomore outing would be a straight on horror film, Us. When it opened, my students flocked to see it, many enjoying it, and several saying they needed to see it twice to fully appreciate it.
The film, from Universal Home Entertainment, is out on home video tomorrow, and I have to say, I don’t get the fuss. Once again, Peele layers in social commentary mixed with his horror tropes (a modern-day Body Snatchers?), but I was fairly bored for the majority of the film.
In short, your perfect nuclear family, headed by Lupita Nyong’o (in a part Peele wrote just for her) and Winston Duke, has their lives turned upside down when their home is invaded by red-tracksuited doppelgangers.

I understand the compulsion to find a fresh take on a classic tale. After all, you have the weight of literary history and beloved film adaptations to contend with, so a straight remake would be boring. But, when you tackle a Robin Hood tale, it has to be set in a plausible time and place, with characters that make sense.
The legend of Robin Hood dates back to the 13th or 14th century and in time grew in scope so it wasn’t just Robin versus the Sheriff of Nottingham, but came to encompass King John and the Crusades.
There are so many ballads and poems to draw from for inspiration that a nice, historically accurate film would have been welcome. Instead, Director Otto Bathurst and screenwriters Ben Chandler and David James Kelly went in entirely the other direction, creating a fantastical Medieval world that was visually stunning and entirely devoid of interest.

Those who attended Solo: A Star Wars Story during its theatrical run were treated to an entertaining adventure story, leavened with the patented humor derived from the original trilogy. It was well cast, well produced, and enjoyable. All the behind the scenes contretemps in no way spoiled the final product, which is out tomorrow from Disney Home Entertainment on a variety of discs and packages.
Yes, the version that was shot under directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller would have been dramatically different, perhaps too different for the Lucasfilm executives. We have no way of knowing since no footage has been released. The casting didn’t change and incoming Ron Howard was a good choice, able to get things up and running smoothly and delivering a satisfying movie.
So, why didn’t people flock to see the movie despite positive buzz? Hard to say. Yes, coming out so quickly after...

Pennywise lives!
Stephen King’s ancient, primordial entity was first introduced to moviegoers via It back in September, and it didn’t take long before Pennywise was reinstated as a bona fide horror icon, launching a thousand nightmares of red balloons and otherworldly clowns in the process.
By all accounts, New Line and director Andy Muschietti knocked it out of the park with their big-screen adaptation, but when it comes to Pennywise, in particular, we have Bill Skarsgård to thank for his, ahem, scenery-chewing, unforgettable performance. The Swede has been fairly forthcoming about his approach to the King classic, and thanks to the film’s soon-to-be-released Blu-ray, a new It featurette brings us closer to Skarsgård’s on-screen monster – the Eater of Worlds.
Here’s a recap of those bonus features to be included in the inevitable It Blu-ray:
