Terminology associated with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI):
- Breacher syndrome- is an unofficial term that describes the long-term effects of repetitive traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in people who experience repeated exposure to blasts.
- Uncal herniation - when part of the brain, the uncas, encroaches another part causing neurological damage.
- Diffuse Tensor Imaging - A specialized form of MRI, where water molecules are excited by Magnetic Fields in selected pre-determined directions, and the diffusion or movement of said water molecules would serve as a probe which would map the complex neuronal network of the brain, especially the white matter which moves the sensory signals to regions of the brain, the various cortices' for the five sense, close to the skull called grey matter, which processes those signals.
- Astroglial scarring - when a part of the brain is injured, astrocytes form and divide and migrate over to the area of injury and envelope said injury. These scarring events, if they take place too often, is said to cause neurological and psychiatric complications such as headache, anxiety, sleep deprivation, vision and memory impairment, and prolonged pain.
GIGN - Groupe d'intervention de la Gendarmerie Nationale (National Gendarmerie Intervention Group) is an elite tactical unit of the National Gendarmerie of France, one of France's two main national law enforcement units (roughly their equivalent to DHS/FBI). The National Gendarmerie is actually a branch of the French Armed Forces, they are responsible for policing small towns and rural areas. Some of the Gendarmerie's elite units also carry out a range of defense and military missions, like the GIGN for example; the GIGN specializes in counterterrorism, hostage rescue, surveillance of national threats, protection of government officials, protection of French embassies and combating organized crime. Most GIGN operations take place in France, however as a special forces unit of the French military they can operate anywhere in the world to defend the interests of France, their foreign missions are highly classified and GIGN operatives are not allowed to be publicly photographed. GIGN often trains alongside and conducts joint missions with other NATO counterterrorism units like the FBI's elite HRT unit, Army Delta Force, Navy SEAL's, British SAS, Australian SPS and German GSG.
The episode title "Conspicuous Gallantry" refers to one of the necessary conditions to receive the Medal of Honor.
