The 6th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival makes its move into October this year where it will be screening on Oct. 3-6 at the St. Anthony Main Theater. The fest, while screening new films from all over, does a fantastic job of screening movies by local Minnesota filmmakers.
Some of these locally produced films include Mark Nielson’s spooky road trip flick Land of Sky Blue Water; Adam Jacobs’ suspense comedy Weekend Hat, which was also produced entirely by high school students; Dave Ash’s sci-fi drama Connected, which is co-directed by Paul von Stoetzel, whose short film Twisted Sister screens before the feature; Donny West’s autobiographical documentary Dazzle (The Donny West Story); and Phil Holbrook’s drama Tilt. There are also loads of short film programs featuring work by local filmmakers.

It would be the film with the juju in David O. Russell’s zany black comedy that was the toast of the 28th Independent Spirit Awards beating Beasts Of The Southern Wild – its fiercest rival in all major categories. Silver Linings Playbook cleaned up, grabbing Best Feature, Director, Screenplay and Best Actress went to Jennifer Lawrence – the heavy favorite for tomorrow’s Oscar. Fox Searchlight might have grabbed only one award for Beasts in the Cinematography category, but it’s other Sundance pick-up The Sessions managed to nab a pair of acting prizes for Helen Hunt and Oscar snubbed John Hawkes for Best Male Lead. In our favorite grant categories, Adam Leon (Gimme the Loot) nabbed the Someone to Watch Award (last year it went to Mark Jackson), the Piaget Producers Award went to Mynette Louie (she produced Tze Chun’s sophomore film Eye of Winter which we are keeping...

#61. Stones in the Sun - Patricia Benoit Known as "Haiti Cherie" back when it was in 2007 Screenwriters and Directors Lab at Sundance, it has since picked up an Annenberg Film Fellowship Grant in 2009 and changed its name to Stones in the Sun. A longtime in the works, Patricia Benoit's debut should be a good fit for the U.S Dramatic Comp or the Next section. Note: pic above is a random shot of Haiti. Gist: Through interconnected stories of exile, a young couple, two sisters and a father and son find that shedding the past is impossible when it is marred by torture and violence. Achingly real and timely, the film reveals the rich complexity of immigrant life in the United States and the powerful links between the personal and the political, the present and the past. Producers: Karin Chien (Circumstance), Ben Howe (Don't Let Me Drown) and Mynette Louie (Children of Invention)(Ioncinema.
