A jogger discovers The body of a young woman early one morning. Leading the case is DCI Him Taggart, a hard biased Glasgow copper, assisting him is softly spoken DS Peter Livingstone, it's not a harmonious working arrangement.
It's a very good start to the series, it is so different visually and musically to the main show, it doesn't really feel like what would follow, but then again, it is a pilot.
A cracking opening, panoramic shots, classical music, how different to later episodes. When it returned it would be more gritty looking, and sounding more electric.
I love the clash of personalities, opinions, ethics between Taggart and Livingstone, the pair have absolutely nothing in common. McManus is just captivating as Taggart, he's fabulous, his clear loathing for his new colleague is what makes it work so well. We learn that Jim has a nose for a bottle of YSL's Opium too.
Do they give the game away by presenting a suspect early on? Keep on watching.
Interestingly, it would be two years before the show would return with Dead Ringer.
7/10.
