Photography converts the whole world into a cemetery. Photographers, connoisseurs of beauty, are also – wittingly or unwittingly – the recording-angels of death.
– Susan Sontag
Those words appear at the beginning of Disappear Completely (Desaparecer Por Completo), and seem perfectly appropriate as we see Santiago sitting in his car listening to the police radio. He’s a photographer, and he’s waiting to hear what he’ll be covering next. He doesn’t have long to wait before he’s busy shooting pictures of a cuffed suspect, sobbing victims in an ambulance, and, with the help of a bribe, a woman’s corpse.
Santiago works for a Mexican tabloid, one that very firmly believes the old adage, “If it bleeds, it leads”. And he’s excellent at capturing that bleeding on film, regardless of the cost.

Mother’s Day weekend 2019 marked a turning point in the young life of Madhuri Shekar.
It all started two years before with a phone call from a woman named Kate Navin, then head of theater for Audible. Navin said she’d recently been armed with money to develop original works from emerging play- wrights, and she was calling to offer Shekar, just a year out of Juilliard, the chance to write. The only catch: Shekar’s play would have to be crafted as an audio-only production.
Shekar’s answer to this challenge was “Evil Eye,” a 100-minute potboiler that revolves around daily telephone conversations between a mother in India and a daughter in Los Angeles. The finished play was released on Audible in May 2019. For Shekar, the impact on her career was immediate. Within weeks, she was negotiating a deal with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Blumhouse for the movie version...

Luis Colón became the fourth contestant eliminated from “The Challenge: USA” on Sunday night, following his loss to Chris Underwood in the arena. In the game “Evil Eye,” each man began in the center of the arena, holding on to either side of the “evil eye.” After host T.J. Lavin said “Go!” they engaged in a physical battle, trying to wrestle the object away from each other. In the end, Chris pulled off the win and sent the rookie from “The Amazing Race” packing. Watch our exclusive video interview with the eliminated contestant above.
“We knew since Episode 1 that they were coming after us,” Luis tells Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson. “We had the best team. The women on our team were the reason why we were so good. Desi [Williams] and Michaela [Bradshaw], those girls are badasses. That was the only way that they would have won was to [gang] up on us.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Challenge: USA Season 2 Episode 4 “Double Crossed and Sideswiped.”] Green Team is not the place to be on The Challenge: USA right now. Not only was it a double elimination episode, but Red and Blue teams (fresh off Johnny Bananas defecting from the former to the latter) worked together during the daily challenge. As a result, Red won, and Josh Martinez, despite quite the messy nominations, got his way and both Desi Williams and Luis Colon, both from Green, were sent into elimination. The secret vote and the hopper led to them facing off against Amanda Garcia and Chris Underwood in Evil Eye, in which they had to try to get the disc out of the ring. Colon and Garcia were sent home. Here, Colon reveals what we didn’t see during that elimination, what he thought about the other teams working together, and why he wouldn’t immediately say yes to doing ...

Onyx Collective has boarded Candice Carty-Williams’ buzzy British drama series Queenie.
Disney Entertainment’s brand has joined Channel 4 in the UK on the show, which the British network ordered back in August 2021. Onyx Collective curates global stories from artists of color with a culturally specific point of view, which aligns with Carty-Williams’ story.
Queenie will air in the UK and Ireland on Channel 4 and stream exclusively on Hulu in the U.S., Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ in all other territories. Steve November’s Further South Productions is attached to produce in association with Lionsgate TV, which has international sales rights, and cast has also been set. Shooting began in late April.
Writer Carty-Williams is emerging as one of the UK’s most sought after new scribes. Netflix last year boarded her BBC series Champion, which is billed as “a love letter to Black British music.”

Author Vauhini Vara’s acclaimed debut novel, The Immortal King Rao, is being adapted for television.
Independent studio Wiip (Mare of Easttown, Dickinson) has acquired rights to the novel — which made several best books of 2022 lists — and will develop it as a TV series. Playwright and screenwriter Madhuri Shekar is set to adapt the story and will serve as an executive producer.
“I worked on this novel for 13 years, during which I often fantasized about the on-screen version I’d get to watch one day: how big and dramatic and genre-twisty I imagined it would be,” said Vara, a former business editor at The New Yorker, in a statement. “That this is actually on its way to happening — and with a dream team of colleagues whose work I so admire, including the visionary Madhuri Shekar at the writing helm — could not be more exciting.”

Director Isaac Ezban (The Similars, The Incident) departs from his usual exploration of science fiction to deliver his first full horror feature, Evil Eye (Mal de Ojo). Ezban uses his sci-fi origins as an entry point into a horror fairy tale that blends Dominican myth and Mexican folklore with modern sensibilities for an emotionally charged, witchy story full of blood.
Parents Rebecca (Samantha Castillo) and Guillermo (Arap Bethke) grow increasingly worried over sickly young daughter Luna (Ivanna Sofia Ferro), who’s becoming increasingly resistant to treatment for her illness. They pack her up along with neglected older sibling Nala (Paola Miguel) and head to the countryside. The parents leave their children behind with Grandma Josefa (Ofelia Medina) as they head back to the city, searching for cures beyond conventional medicine. Isaac Ezban's "Evil Eye" ("Mal de Ojo") welcomes and reassures audiences with grandmotherly comforts like a folkloric horror tale before nap time. Co-writers Junior Rosario and Edgar San Juan help Ezban summon brujas (basically witches) and terrify infirm children with witchy production value fit for the grimmest fairy tale books. "Evil Eye" explores Dominican campfire stories that drip of slime-green goo and adolescent curiosities about the dark arts. Ezban's filmmaking is a warm genre blanket that wraps around viewers, as the soothing bonds of bloodlines turn treacherous the farther we press into whimsically malevolent cultural influences.
Littlest Luna (Ivanna Sofia Ferro) suffers from an affliction that her parents will do anything to cure. Mother Rebecca (Samantha Castillo) and father Guillermo (Arap Bethke) have enough to worry about as their rental complex is ravaged by a sickness that continually infects children — luckily Luna and older sister Nala (Paola Miguel) remain unaffected,...
