In 1969, when “Sesame Street” premiered, it invented a thing called children’s “educational” television, and few would deny that it fulfilled that mission — to teach kids and delight them at the same moment. The legacy of “Sesame Street” is vast, to the point that dozens of children’s shows that don’t call themselves educational, or even think of themselves that way, now subscribe to the same mission. In our era, some of the best kids’ TV has been fast and furious, diabolically witty and smart — the educational equivalent of a roller-coaster ride. I’m thinking of shows like “Team Umizoomi,” “The Loud House,” “Apple & Onion,” and “Phineas and Ferb,” which ended its four-season run on the Disney Channel in 2015. So it’s no surprise that “Phineas and Ferb The Movie: Candace Against the Universe” is one of the sharpest kids’ movies in a while.

Viacom’s Nickelodeon plans to stir new technology into its Noggin subscription service with the acquisition of Sparkler — a move that promises to give parents tools to guide the learning of their preschool-age kids.
Nick on Friday announced the deal to acquire New York-based Sparkler, an early-childhood learning technology platform. The cabler also appointed Sparkler co-founder and CEO Kristen Kane (pictured above) as the new head of for the Noggin direct-to-consumer service.
A Nick rep declined to reveal how much the company paid for Sparkler or how many employees it has. Sparkler, founded in 2015, had received funding from angel investors and selected grants, including from the NewSchools Venture Fund, a nonprofit educational organization.
Nickelodeon said that over the next year, Sparkler’s technology — designed to measure child development and coach parents on improving their kids’ learning — will be integrated into Noggin’s platform. That will provide tools for parents to...

Netflix will be the home of three new DreamWorks Animation Television kids series in 2019 and 2020, the companies announced.
The new shows include Archibald’s Next Big Thing from Emmy Award-winner Tony Hale. The new slate was announced during a MIPJr. keynote by Margie Cohn, president of DreamWorks Animation Television.
The new series include:
Archibald’s Next Big Thing – 2019: Inspired by the children’s book from Tony Hale, Tony Biaggne, and Victor Huckabee, the show follows the adventures of Archibald Strutter, a chicken who “yes-ands” his way thru life. Though living in the moment often leads him astray, Archibald always finds his way back home. Executive produced by Hale, Archibald’s Next Big Thing emphasizes the importance of being present and celebrating the journey, not just the destination.
Gabby’s Dollhouse – 2020: A preschool show with a surprise inside, created and executive produced by Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey, Gabby’s Dollhouse is a mixed media series that unboxes a surprise before jumping into a fantastical animated world full of adorable cat characters that live inside Gabby’s dollhouse.
Rhyme Time Town – 2020: Daisy the Puppy and Cole the Kitten are ready to guide young children through a colorful and adventurous world filled with nursery rhymes and imaginative play.
Previously announced upcoming series from DreamWorks and Netflix include She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Nov 16) from executive producer Noelle Stevenson and Tales of Arcadia: 3Below (Dec 21) and Tales of Arcadia: Wizards (2019) from Guillermo del Toro and the Emmy-winning team behind Trollhunters. There are certain characters in video games, movies, TV, wherever, and you think to yourself “why?” On the one hand you’ve got strange kids characters that make zero sense and yet are popular among the masses. Let’s use teletubbies as an example. How about Minions? Why the hell is Team Umizoomi so popular? Then you’ve got freakish characters like Pennywise and you think to yourself, “why the hell would someone do that to us?” For whatever reason, characters that seem to make no sense to many of us, are popular among the rest of us. I bring this up because

Harold And Maude (Criterion) Hal Ashby’s masterpiece of black humor centers on a wealthy young man (Bud Cort) who’s obsessed with death and the septuagenarian (Ruth Gordon) with whom he finds true love. As unabashedly romantic as it is quirky, with Cat Stevens supplying one of the great film scores of all-time. Fine support from Vivian Pickles, Cyril Cusack, Charles Tyner, and Ellen Geer. Fine screenplay by Colin Higgins. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Commentary by Hal Ashby biographer Nick Dawson, producer Charles Mulvehill; Illustrated audio excerpts from seminars by Ashby and Higgins; Interview with Cat Stevens. Widescreen. Dolby 2.0 stereo.
In Darkness (Sony) Agnieszka Holland’s Ww II epic tells the true story of a sewer worker and petty thief in Nazi-occupied Poland who single-handedly helped hide a group of Jews in the city’s labyrinthine sewer system for the duration of the war.

Terri (20th Century Fox) An awkward, obese teen (Jacob Wysocki) finds himself forming an odd friendship with his equally left-of-center vice-principal (John C. Reilly), who decides to help the boy navigate his way through adolescence’s rocky road. Low key film is filled with pathos and humor, but is ultimately too laid back for its own good (not to mention too long). Worth seeing for young Wysocki’s amazing, completely natural performance, and Reilly’s goofy charm. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurette; Deleted scenes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Mr. Nice (Mpi) Rhys Ifans stars in the true story of Howard Marks, a Welsh-born Oxford grad who gained the most notoriety in his life for being the UK’s biggest hashish smuggler during the ‘70s and ‘80s, when he wasn’t busy spying for Her Majesty’s government, hanging out with a...
