- Once upon a time, there was a pink, passionate, polite hippopotamus named Taffy. She was a very talented and friendly hippo, and she lived in an orange lake, surrounded by Caribbean blue and sunburst yellow trees, emerald green roses and royal purple grass.—Tara Miller
- A pink, passionate, polite hippopotamus named Taffy who lives in an orange lake surrounded by blue and yellow trees, emerald green roses and purple grass. In the story, the lake is referred to as a "moat." One sunny morning, Taffy is quietly taking a swim in the lake, as birds fly tweeting overhead. Upon hearing a noise of someone sobbing uncontrollably, Taffy turns toward the sound. Taffy sees her crying rose friend, and swims toward her. Her friends, Mr. and Mrs. Emerald Green Rose live on the shoreline, and Mr. Rose is trying to console Mrs. Rose, who is sobbing. Taffy asks Mrs. Rose "Why are you crying?" Mrs. Rose explains that some of the trees had told her that roses "should be the color red," which made her feel unwanted and disrespected. Taffy is shocked by Mrs. Rose's plight, but she helps the Rose family understand that the color of their petals does not affect their true inner beauty. Once again, Taffy encounters another dispute between the dirt and the grass. She helps settle this dispute between Miss Dirt and Mr. Grass about his purple color, explaining that purple clothing was once used to indicate the status of royalty. Finally, in the midst of a violent thunderstorm, she encounters Mr. Rain, who is extremely upset. Taffy learns of Mr. Rain's anger caused by discord in the interaction among a great many characters who live around the orange lake. Taffy convinces Mr. Rain to calm his anger, resulting in the storm subsiding into gentle sprinkles. After the rain stops, a beautiful rainbow appears. With harmony in her heart, Taffy is tickled pink, all the way home.
