This World War Two training film about procedures for flying a fighter plane is some bald instructions enlivened by Huntz Hall as Ensign Dilbert.

In 2014, Dilbert is the hapless cartoon engineer trapped in a corporate structure that makes no sense and is miserable because he is continually thwarted in in efforts to do his job. In 1943 Ensign Dilbert was the hapless, careless sort of man whose negligence kills other people. Despite that terrible thought and the occasional shots of corpses caused by Dilbert, Hall's performance is the only thing that stops this picture from being radio with pictures.

Hall was a capable actor but he specialized in playing comic fools, starting with the stage production of DEAD END and continuing in spin-off series like the Bowery Boys. In real life he was no fool. By the time he semi-retired in 1957 at the age of 38, his investments had made his financially very comfortable.

Don't Kill Your Friends is worth a look for any Huntz Hall fans out there

Just discovered this vintage Navy training film on YouTube. Huntz Hall plays Dilbert-a live action version of a cartoon character of the military unit who does all the wrong things concerning plane safety that causes his fellow men to be killed. He does what you expect him to do: have some funny moments when he speaks (Love his laugh here!) before the short gets serious about what happens if you do like Dilbert does. The music score is the comical kind you hear in comedy shorts or cartoons. The narrator doesn't sound very exciting so it's a plus that Hall got to appear in this as otherwise, one would probably go to sleep if it was serious the whole way through. So on that note, Don't Kill Your Friends is worth a look for any Huntz Hall completists out there.

Don't be a Dilbert!

The key point this navy training short is 'Don't Be a Dilbert'. In other words, don't do the things the idiot Ensign Dilbert does when he uses his guns or tows a target during practice. Again and again, Dilbert ignores safety protocols and endangers the men around him. Dilbert is played by the perfect actor for such a part--Huntz Hall from the Bowery Boys/East Side Kids. The film manages to put across the point (made using dry narration) by mixing it with comedy. All and all, very effective and enjoyable to watch...much like the Private Snafu cartoons made to be shown to the troops during the war. I won't give this one a rating for two reasons. First, it was never meant for general consumption--just for viewing by pilots. Second, how could you possibly rate it?! Overall, it's a very interesting historical film...worth seeing if you love aircraft or Huntz Hall!
