George Sand in the country

Warning: Spoilers
This ambitious account on the life of France's best known literary rebel, George Sand as she settled in the country after a tumultuous life in Paris, was shown as a two part mini-series in French television. Under the direction of Jean-Daniel Verhaeghe, this gorgeous production shot around Limousin, gives us a glimpse of the woman who was way ahead of her times. She was above and beyond what society considered the standards of normalcy.

The action centers around the friendship between George Sand and a young peasant girl, Fanchette, whom she takes under her wing. Fanchette paid her patroness in kindness being at her side after she took refuge from her past life into the calm setting of her country estate. The action takes place after her affair with Frederic Chopin was over, although she had fond memories of their time together. Her place in Nohant attracted people that remained loyal to the writer until her death. George's son Meurice appears on the scene, clearly disapproving her mother's involvement with the young peasant.

Ariane Ascaride does a magnificent job impersonating the writer. Ms. Ascaride exudes charm and plays the famous author with intelligence and candor. The lovely Anais Demoustier appears as Fanchette, making quite an impression in the subtle way she gets into her character. Rapahel Personnaz plays Meurice, George Sand's uppity son. Alexis Loret is good as Alexandre Manceau. Fabrice Pruvost is seen briefly as Chopin. Denis Podalydes has a minor role in the production.

None of the great results would have been possible if it were not for the fantastic camera work by Marc Falchier who lovingly captures for the viewer's enjoyment the magnificent French country side in poetic pictures that enhance this mini-series.
