- Awilda is aloof to her natural great ability to spell. She is coerced by her teacher to enter her school spelling bee. After winning the local spelling bee, a mysterious professor, Morpheus, takes a special interest in Awilda, and decides to train her for the next level: The BX National Spelling Bee. Professor Morpheus sees Awilda's desire to be a winner, but in-order to do so she will have to overcome the obstacles of a few haters, a "smart-Chinese kid" and issues of her own self- confidence.—Victor Cruz
- Awilda Lopez, A young Puerto Rican girl from the South Bronx discovers her gift for spelling words. She is advised by her high school English teacher to partake in the school's yearly spelling bee. When she wins and is on her way to the Bronx National Spelling Bee, she is then introduced to Professor Morphius who will now further her training in the art of spelling. Though a little hesitant at first, Awilda finally gives in and prepares for the main event. The only challenge now left for her to overcome, is no longer the challenge of spelling certain words, but the biggest challenge of them all, and that is facing herself and her own fears.
