Multi award-winning Filipina actress Ruby Ruiz has landed her first major screen role following her appearance in Amazon’s “Expats.” She will lead “First Light,” the feature directorial debut of James. J. Robinson.
Principal photography is now underway on the Australian-Filipino co-production, which comes with funding from Screen Australia. Veteran actress Maricel Soriano (“Mother Nanny”), Rez Cortez (“Bukal”), Soliman Cruz (“Blue Room”) and Kidlat Tahimik round out the cast.
Set in the remote mountains of the Philippines, “First Light” sees the death of a young construction worker force an elderly nun to confront the muddied ethics of an institution she has dedicated her life to. The script, also by Robinson, is a deeply personal story exploring the intersection of duty, faith and institutional power.
“Developing ‘First Light’ over the past two years has been an incredibly profound journey into the heart of pre-colonial Filipino philosophy,” Robinson said. “To be able...

This Demon Slayer review contains spoilers.
Demon Slayer Season 3 Episode 11
“Thank goodness, right?”
“Don’t run away from your responsibilities.”
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’s third season finale, “A Connected Bond: Daybreak and First Light,” begins with a fiery threat from Tanjiro to Hantengu: “Don’t run away from your responsibilities.” This may seem like a silly order to command in the height of combat, but it’s the guiding force and larger theme that holds together this finale–and the season as a whole.
The importance of perseverance and never giving up is pretty par for the course with shonen protagonists and it’s hardly a groundbreaking revelation. That being said, it’s still enough to give focus to this finale’s many fighters, whether it’s Nezuko, Tokito, Tanjiro, or even Muzan Kibutsuji. “A Connected Bond: Daybreak and First Light” has its share of highs and lows,...

This second world war aviation drama is a film of laudable ambition but limited means, too little invention and a cliched script
Attempting to do a second world war aviation picture on a microbudget certainly meets the definition of underdog British pluck. But unlike the Raf in the Battle of Britain, Spitfire Over Berlin can’t surmount overwhelming odds. It’s somewhat frustrating because it’s not the visuals that let Callum Burn’s film down (though some of the CGI used for the external scenes is much too clean-looking); it’s the cliche-ballasted script, without enough fuel to fill an hour-and-a-quarter runtime, that sends the film blazing groundwards.
Spitfire pilot Edward (Kris Saddler), who enjoys buzzing English hedgerows on practice flights, seems to be the local daredevil in residence. But he draws the short straw when he is the only man available for Operation Extreme Jeopardy: to take an...

In a further sign of consolidation among independent distributors, Rialto Distribution has closed its Sydney office while continuing to book films into Australian cinemas via its Auckland headquarters.
However the end of the company’s presence in Oz after more than 20 years does not signal any reduction in acquisitions for multiple-platform release.
“We have gained much-needed economies of scale with Kevin Gordon, our Australia/New Zealand sales and distribution manager, selling in directly,” CEO Kelly Rogers tells If.
“This is going very well and Australian exhibitors are receptive to our strong line-up. We expect to release approximately 30 titles in 2020, mainly digital titles and select strong theatrical films.”
Former Myriad Pictures and Icon Film Distribution marketing executive Lisa Garner, who joined Rialto as Sydney-based head of film in February 2018, expects to soon announce her next venture.

While director Matt Reeves ("Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes") continues casting for some fey lead to star in his developing stand-alone "Batman" feature, brawny "Outlander" star Sam Heughan, who previously played the 'Dark Knight' for the "Batman Live" arena show, recently won an online poll at JustJared.com, appealing to both male and female fans as the next big screen 'Caped Crusader':

While director Matt Reeves searches for a 'familiar actor' to play 'Batman' in his developing Warners feature "The Batman", "Outlander" star Sam Heughan would like to remind Reeves he played the 'Caped Crusader' in Warners "Batman Live: Arena Tour" as a chisled-looking, super-physically fit character, rather than a pot-bellied Ben Affleck, or rodent-faced Christian Bale:

Director Cory Barlog's God of War Dlc ideas were basically "too big" to make...
Sony and Santa Monica Studio's God of War was one of the biggest games of last year, garnering glowing reviews and massive sales as well as captivating fans along the way. Rejigging Kratos into a struggling father was a masterstroke from a storytelling standpoint, and the graphics and gameplay didn't disappoint in bringing that idea to life. But one thing the game didn't have was any big post-release Dlc.
Although there has been a decent amount of surrounding materials for the game's legions of loyal fans - including a Deluxe Edition, extra skins, a novelization, an audiobook, some Dark Horse comics, a Photo Mode, and New Game Plus - the lack of major story Dlc didn't go unnoticed.
Now, director Cory Barlog has explained why there wasn't any God of War Dlc.

‘Pimped’
David Barker’s psychological thriller Pimped, which explores what might happen if two men lured a woman who proved to be stronger, smarter and more cunning than them, won the Australian feature award at Monster Fest: The Homecoming.
Staged at Cinema Nova from November 22-25, the seventh edition of Monster Fest drew nearly 2,900 patrons, a record for the event.
The Golden Monster award for best feature went to director Jonas Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos, which is set in Oslo in 1987 and stars Rory Culkin as a teenager who forms the aptly-titled black metal band Mayhem with his equally fanatical mates. They begin burning down churches throughout the countryside and stealing tombstones for their record store, leading to violence. It has yet to find a local distributor.

Some 50 years after the occupation of Czechoslovakia by Soviet forces, tensions in the Czech Republic still remain. Indeed, although she hails from Ukraine, an area whose people have much more in common with the Czechs than they perhaps realize, director Anna Kryvenko, who now lives in Prague, is well aware of anti-immigrant prejudice that Russian-speakers often face on a daily basis there. However, this was not uppermost in her mind when Kryvenko embarked on the film school project that eventually became her feature debut “My Unknown Soldier,” which premieres in the First Light strand of the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.
Using rare archival footage from the time, the film pivots on a family secret that only came to light as Kryvenko was researching the period: her grand uncle was part of the occupying forces that came to Czechoslovakia in 1968 as a Soviet soldier and had subsequently been banished from the family album.

"She's different from the others." Gravitas has debuted an official trailer for an intriguing indie sci-fi film titled At First Light, originally just First Light. The film premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, the second feature made by filmmaker Jason Stone. At First Light is about a young woman named Alex Lainey, played by newcomer Stefanie Scott, who has a close encounter with mysterious orbs of light that leave her with extraordinary powers. As they flee from their families, the police, and a government agency, Alex and her friend Sean find themselves at the center of an unprecedented event in human history. The cast includes Théodore Pellerin, Kristin Booth, Kate Burton, and Josh Cruddas. This actually looks pretty damn cool. Even though we've seen plenty of superpowers movies recently, I'm a bit more curious about this one. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Jason Stone's At First Light, direct...
