Remember when you were 20 years old, and desperately wanted to get away, to change the direction your boring life was heading, to assert your independence? Parental love and the pressure to do the right thing can be stifling at that age. The lure of adventure and far-off destinations is irresistible. (For many people around the world, this thirst is assuaged by spending time in an English-speaking country. Doing something irresponsible that also helps you improve your English is seen as less irresponsible.)
In this movie we follow beautiful and naive Marie (Mirianne Brulé) as she determinedly makes this journey in her life. After hitching across Canada, she ends up in Whistler, where she latches on to handsome and more experienced Jean-Francois (Dany Papineau). They live in a chalet with a few others, a free-spirited group. She has a number of adventures involving partying, low-paid employment, drugs, bisexuality, high-risk skiing, and so on. She realises the depth of her affection for JF when he has an accident.
And then her sister shows up . Will she go back to Quebec? What direction will her life take?
I enjoyed this movie. It appealed to the vagabond and world citizen in me. It had heart and charm and some great music. The ending was perfect.
Downsides: It isn't the slickest of movies (which is perhaps also some of its charm). They picked a poor title. It annoyed me when negative things kept happening to her. Some of the youthful antics annoyed me. It annoyed me when she lied to her mother and didn't ask for money.
I also thought the acting was weak in a few places. Marie so overtly not understanding simple English seemed forced. Most people would just nod their heads and pretend they understood.
