- This two-and-a-half-hour performance art epic (part documentary; part experimental art film; part spiritual pilgrimage) documents performance actionist and activist Preach R Sun (the blind fisherman), as he leads a public processional to the historical Formentera Island lighthouse of Cap de Barbaria. The work, created as a meditative ritual and prayer for the healing of a humanity and world deeply fractured and divided, conceptualizes the black racialized body as object and vehicle of racial transcendence and human salvation.—Preach R. Sun
- The Fisherman: Behold, Sun-Moon Child.... The Fisher of Men is Light of the World.
'And i, if i be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me' (John 12:32).
'Race remains a form of alienation. Freedom is the self-emancipation from, or the abolishing of race. This process of self-abolition establishes the conditions for a universal humanity to emerge. The dialectical supersession of race, in which one's existence as race is abolished, means that the emancipatory content of racial struggle and thought is preserved and realized in new, universal form.' - Fanon and the Theory of Race
On the tiny and magical Balearic Island of Formentera, located at the islands edge - high upon a massive cliff overlooking the sea - sits the historic lighthouse of Cap de Barbaria. The lighthouse of Cap de Barbaria (Head of Barbary) illuminates the window of Africa from where it stands as closest geographical point to the continent's northern coast.
This two-and-a-half-hour performance art epic (part documentary; part experimental art film; part spiritual pilgrimage) documents performance actionist and activist Preach R Sun (the blind fisherman), as he leads a public processional to the lighthouse of Cap de Barbaria. The work, created as a meditative ritual and prayer for the healing of a humanity and world deeply fractured and divided, conceptualizes the black racialized body as object and vehicle of racial transcendence and human salvation. Drawing inspiration from the ancient Persian dualistic cosmology Manichaeism: a religious concept established on principles of good and evil as played out via a 'supposed primeval conflict between light and darkness.' THE FISHERMAN frames the historical struggle between black and white, manifested in the construct of race, as entry point to the imagining of a 'NEW HUMANITY', rooted in the divine collective principle of a 'HUMAN SOLE.'
