Simon Phillips is a busy, busy guy. Having regularly collaborated with director and often-times producing partner Dominic Burns on a number of features, he recently stretched his legs a little more with his directorial debut, GBH (you can read our review here). No sooner was that released than we’ve been treated to the exclusive trailer for UFO, which sees Simon back on acting and producing duties, while Dominic steps once again behind the camera.
We were able to catch up with Simon this week, to chat about GBH and how these various projects of his are coming along.
HeyUGuys: When we last spoke it was for the release of How To Stop Being A Loser, since when you have directed GBH, released White Collar Hooligan and now wrapped on UFO. Your days must be pretty full?
Simon Phillips: Yes – but it’s good to be busy. I meet...

How To Stop Being A Loser arrives on the small screen on Monday, 6th February. You can see what we thought of this at times laugh out loud funny British comedy here and indeed you can win yourself your own copy right here if you get your skates on.
As part of our coverage of this film, I enjoyed spending a few minutes this week speaking with Gemma Atkinson, who plays the pivotal character of Hannah. She was a delight to interview, open and honest and hopefully will go far in what is obviously a pretty competitive marketplace. I started by asking her how she came to be cast in Loser:-
Gemma Atkinson: My agent took a call from (director) Dominic Burns and he sent the script through for me to look at the role of Hannah. I was flattered as I would usually expect to have to audition for a role,...

Having breathed enough mythological fire to secure the Best Fantasy Film prize at BleedFest in Los Angeles, Anne K. Black's Dawn of the Dragon Slayer is heading to UK stores on DVD and Blu-ray on February 13, 2012.
The film is the first fantasy dragon feature to be directed by a woman and Anne presented the world premiere of the movie at BleedFest last September.
The festival is held in Los Angeles every month and celebrates "the women who love writing, producing, directing, and watching badass genre movies: action, thriller, sci-fi, horror, fantasy, western, exploitation (of men or audience only), B-movie, and erotica."
It was the first directing role for Anne, who also co-wrote the special effects extravaganza and previously co-scripted the 2003 modern-day update of Pride & Prejudice. After the praise for Dawn of The Dragon Slayer, she is now finishing work on another sword-and-sorcery film titled The Virgin And The Warrior.

Magic Trip (15)
(Alison Ellwood, Alex Gibney, 2011, Us) 107 mins
Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters' LSD-fuelled 1964 road trip is one of those seminal cultural moments you can't believe really happened, at least not like it did in The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. But here it is, chaotically shot and narrated by the culprits themselves and painstakingly reassembled. That makes for a certain lack of perspective, and watching others having a great time isn't necessarily the same as having one, but the contrast between these turned-on teens and square 60s America is often hilarious.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (12A)
(Bill Condon, 2011, Us) Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner. 117 mins
At last, some consummation! Bella and Edward's wedding comes a few movies too late for neutral observers, but the supernatural saga is in no danger of coming to an abrupt end, thanks to the franchise's determination to vampirically milk fans dry.

How To Stop Being A Loser gets its release this coming Friday and you can read our generally pretty positive review right here.
As part of our coverage of Loser, I recently interviewed its director, Dominic Burns about the film, his development as a director and the exciting new projects he has in the pipeline. We also spoke to the film’s leading man, Simon Phillips, and you can read that interview here.
HeyUGuys: You acted for a few yeas before turning to directing, how did that progression come about?
Dominic Burns: I had always wanted to be an actor. Then we were setting up Cut [2010 horror film which Burns starred in and wrote] which was going to be the first ever single-take horror film. For it to work, the location was absolutely key and that changed at the last minute, which meant the guy scheduled to direct couldn’t any more. By that point I was...

With his excellent turn in How To Stop Being A Loser making its way onto our screens this week (check out our review here), I caught up with Simon Phillips to chat Loser and all the rest of what’s going on in his busy life these days:-
HeyUGuys: Congratulations on Loser, it’s not easy to balance the funny, gross and sweet elements, but for what it’s worth, I think the film managed it. Did you feel you were getting the balance right as you were filming?
Simon Phillips: Sometimes it is a difficult thing to judge. I think what makes comedy great is when you’re able to engage with the characters. It’s the same with sci-fi and action. If the audience engage with your characters you can put them anywhere and if [the audience] are with you, they’ll see it through.

How To Stop Being A Loser is the story of life-long dork and lady-repellent James who is given a dying demand by his best friend; don’t die a “dateless wonder”. This advice sets James on a path to pursue the woman of his dreams, by employing the pick-up guru Ampersand to teach him the ways of the game.
This is the second film in a seeming mass-production line from British director Dominic Burns. It is also a departure from his previous and upcoming movies that wander the horror and thriller genres. How To Stop Being A Loser is slated as a comedy. A very loose description of this movie.
The word cliche was summoned to mind constantly throughout my viewing of this film, that seemed little more than a mish-mash of scenes from other dating genre flicks. But instead of smart, witty or even mediocre...

Piracy is a big headache for the entertainment industry, as evidenced by the online leak of X-Men Origins: Wolverine a month before it was in cinemas.
The problem accounts for annual losses of over £500million in the UK.
But research is showing that campaigners against bootlegging are starting to get their point across.
To spread the message further, UK film website FindAnyFilm.com has launched a multi-million-pound campaign, funded by the Industry Trust for Intellectual Property Awareness.
The campaign "capitalises on audiences' passion for film and TV content to inspire greater respect for copyright and the value of creative works. It celebrates the intense emotional payback of great viewing experiences - and proposes this is worth paying for."
And now actor Simon Phillips, star of upcoming How To Stop Being A Loser, which hits cinemas on November 18, has given his backing to the initiative. He has chosen Withnail And I...

Actress Gemma Atkinson first came to prominence during a five year stint as Lisa Hunter on the soap opera Hollyoaks. Since leaving the show, Gemma has cemented her reputation as an actress by appearing in the wildly popular stage version of Calendar Girls as well as taking on a variety of different roles in TV dramas and films. Her huge popularity earned her a spot on the TV show “I’m a Celebrity get me out of Here,” in which she came fifth. Earlier this year, Gemma took the decision to return to serious drama and decided to accept a role on the BBC’s long running medical drama Casualty. Kieran Kinsella recently had the opportunity to speak with Gemma Atkinson about the new role and her other upcoming projects.

It was inevitable, I suppose. The Muscles From Brussels has fought many foes in his weird-assed career: cyborgs, spies, assassins, time-travelers, cajun human-hunters, and even his twin brother. There's really only one foe left (other than his own irrelevance)... yup, aliens.
Film School Rejects reports, via Variety, that Jean Claude Van Damme's next film will be UFO, where he will athletically beat the fuck out of invading aliens. More than likely, he will do a split at some point as well, because he fucking can. The film comes from director Dominic Burns, who previously directed How To Stop Being A Loser, which, from what I can tell, stars a bunch of British Page Six girls. So yeah. Burns previously worked with Black And Blue Productions, which also has films like the upcoming Strippers Vs. Werewolves on its plate, although this one will be via his own production company.

Not too revealing, well, with nudity like we all want from a flick called Strippers vs. Werewolves, but Dread Central has the teaser poster for the film.
Ahead of shooting on this eagerly awaited comic horror spoof which ‘kick-asses off’ on May 16, Black & Blue Films have released artwork for their teaser campaign.
Jonathan Sothcott, producer, has also revealed the film’s opening scene – which features a stripper, Justice, performing a private lap dance for Mickey, a man who violates the no-touching policy by sprouting fangs and claws and trying to eat her. Justice panics and takes the only option open to her: she drives a silver fountain pen through Mickey’s eye…
Centred around Vixens, a London strip-club, Strippers Vs Werewolves stars Adele Silva, Barbara Nedeljekova (star of Hostel), Lucy Pinder, Billy Murray & Superman villain Sarah Douglas and will be directed by Jonathan (13 Hrs) Glendenning.

We like a good old fashioned slice of crazy cinema here at FilmShaft and Strippers Vs. Werewolves fills that criteria very well. Directed by Jonathan Glendenning, who made 13 Hours, the movie is about, well, have you read the title?

Some new teaser art for Strippers vs. Werewolves has come our way and boy does it ever tease. The only trouble? Given the coloring of the artwork it was at first hard to figure out what were looking at. Now however? We can't stop staring! Dig it!

This week, HeyUGuys were lucky enough to be invited to the May Fair hotel in London for the premiere of British gangster flick Jack Falls. The concluding part of a trilogy, the film is released on DVD and Blu-ray this Monday.
Adapted from the graphic novels written by Paul Tanter (who makes his directorial debut here) it’s a visually ambitious film with a narrative scope which clearly extends beyond its modest budget.
Before the screening, we had the opportunity to chat to some of the figures from behind and in front of the camera (and in some cases, both).
Co- star Alan Ford (aka Bricktop in Snatch) on why the Brit’s love the gangster genre:
It’s nothing new. People have always liked the villains from that type of world, going right back to Bill Sykes in Oliver Twist.
Does he ever tire of being offered roles as the bad guy?...
