The perfect film adaptation of the backrooms
dfp-0603725 January 2022
Kane pixels nailed this. This backrooms short film goes hand in hand with the lore and has multiple references to specific images of liminal spaces. The sound design is also incredibly well done and fully immerses you in the environment. The phenomenal editing keeps the viewer from knowing when there will be an actual jumpscare.

Amazing Youtube horror!
benjamingrubb18 May 2022
For being low budget, filmed by someone under the age of 18, and being based of an urban legend, it is an amazing adaptation with a gripping and suspenseful 9 minutes of film. Just having one person be the main character throughout the whole film only adds to the suspense.

I've been to the set they used. I had to fall through the floor though.

I like it. In fact, I love it. But the one problem I have with it, is it gives me partial nightmares. . I have to get this up to 150 letters so here we go. .

Flawless

Excellent piece of work, and quite possibly the scariest thing I've ever seen. This adaptation of The Backrooms blends a creepy atmosphere, terrifying sound effects, and an unbelievably cool set. 10/10.

Absolutely horrifying and flawless.

The Backrooms (2022) follows a cameraman who finds himself clipped into the backrooms, and this short records his journey wandering around the liminal spaces. I can't praise this short enough, the legend of the backrooms is one of my biggest fears and I hope to see Kane Parsons make something like this again as it shows great potential!

This short was incredibly well-made and felt so real, the found footage element was perfect and really added to the immersion. For me, this film perfectly captures the horrors of liminal spaces.

Visually, this film was great too. The colour palettes were sickly, eerie and unnerving. It definitely wasn't pleasing to the eye but this is exactly why it's so horrifying. The backrooms look so ominous and unsettling yet also nostalgic and strangely familiar.

Possibly the most effective element of the short in my opinion was the sound design. It gave me chills on numerous occasions and really shook me to the core. The static hum mixed with the loud, horrendous noises from the creature creates an absolute nightmare.

Up until seeing the entity, the short builds the tension insanely well. Every corner turned I found myself more on edge and nervous for what was to come.

Lastly, the creature itself was designed to be simple, but super effective and weirdly terrifying. This short film scared me more in ten minutes than most feature length horror films do in two hours.

Simple, sharp dread

Warning: Spoilers
It was, of all things, replies to a thread on Twitter about a keenly similar set of circumstances - unrelated, but very real - that keyed me in to this short film. More than that, though the very term "backroom" bears a certain ominous air to it in any context, I was wholly unaware until now of the "creepypasta" which served up inspiration for young artist Kane Parsons. I don't know about taking additional time to explore the meme to its fullest, but I do know this: these 9 minutes are exceptional.

At its heart it's such a simple concept - a vast unorthodox floor plan, stairs and exits that only flow into another bizarrely unwelcoming area, mundane objects in strange positions, and no people to be found anywhere despite surroundings that by their appearance could and perhaps should be well populated. Make exploration of that space seemingly repetitive, and endless - throw in distinct unsettling sights for one further extra boost - and the result is a short that manages to be exquisitely chilling while on the surface seeming to be so slight and unbothered.

Found footage is a dicey genre, very hit or miss, when it comes to major motion pictures - but at least in this instance, its employment in a short film impresses me as basically perfect. The effects here are sparing, but with Parsons accordingly being a budding visual artist himself, those garnishes we see honestly look fantastic. The editing and doctoring that lends a very believable 1991 flavor to this 2022 movie is a gratifying touch. The unknowable thing that the unseen protagonist encounters is a creation of pure modern dark fantasy - yet for being so out of place in a space that is both familiar and haunting, it is a stroke of brilliance. The stilted, unnatural movement reminds of the stop-motion animation in the first 'Terminator' movie that made our first glimpse of the robot itself genuinely terrifying; the sound effects concocted to accompany the anomaly are amorphous, yet jarring. And whether the lighting in the film is the result of image manipulation or an actual reflection of the illumination provided in the building, the constant bombardment of the hue, contrasted with occasional deep shadow, gives an otherworldly quality to the vision before us.

I would be so very curious to learn more about the production of 'Backrooms.' Where was it filmed? What was fabricated by Parsons own hand - what was his process - and what was instead merely the layout of the space available to him? Whatever confluence it was to make this short a reality, I am very grateful for it. One is readily reminded of the heavily atmospheric dread of master filmmaker John Carpenter, with an unmistakable slant of psychological horror as the protagonist makes one discovery after another that breaks all expectations of reality. I truly didn't know what I was getting into as I began watching, but I have been blown away by what can be conjured by the imagination - an idea at once very small, yet deceptively sophisticated. All due commendations to Kane Parsons and his collaborators: 'Backrooms' is a marvelous genre piece that I heartily recommend to all horror fans!

Warning: Spoilers
Personally, this was pure nightmare fuel. I first watched this and had to read for 10 minutes because of this. Kane made a myth real. I actually thought this was taken in just a big building, and Kane filmed it. Great job, man. This is the best video I watched in years.

Thanks for no sleep.

:D.

An iconic episode for centuries to come.

I think this will probably be engraved in textbooks for next generations to learn about. THAT'S how iconic this episode is. This whole 9 minute video is way too amazing for just one 16 year old to have animated. So amazing to look at. Looks beautiful. Captures that style of old cameras perfectly. Amazing.

9.5/10.

Suspenseful and flawless
vessalalizadeh2 June 2022
This video is available to watch it on YouTube. I've heard things about this video, I've seen some memes about it and a video for telling the explanation of backrooms. When I lied down on my bed and watched Backroom found footage, I was on the edge of my seat and I was so anxious about what's gonna happen. I have nothing to complain about this video. A must watch.

Go to YouTube immediately and watch this impeccably crafted series
thgenrobot28 June 2022
It's supremely difficult to rate this short without taking the series Kane Pixels has been making into account. Each episode has been layering and weaving hints of the larger picture that explains the viral creepypasta of the Backrooms.

While there are far more polished horror films out there, even in the found-footage realm, the tension created in this space is nearly perfect. There are real and imagined dangers with enough puzzle pieces keeping you distracted and intrigued that, even in such a short piece, the horror aspects still manage to surprise and delight.

Go on YouTube, watch this series. You'll be glad you did.

When I watched this short film, I thought it was very old. How did they shoot this, I said to myself. But after seeing it's 2022, it doesn't matter how they shot it :) I think it's a very good short film.

Pretty solid no budget
DanTheButler6 February 2023
I love how awful this started out, only to turn into perhaps the most terrifying 9 minutes of my life. The ability to tell a story with anxiety and solid use of location cannot be matched with a budget lower than this. I'm almost confused enough to think that the camera has an old film filter to making me thing that the location may be digital. Like Severance, I kinda feel like my mind was melting trying to process what I was looking at.

The creature was really original and they did a good job frightening me every second it was in frame. Really excited to see this being adapted into a Hollywood feature film by A24.

Effective Short.
It's always really inspiring to see a small project like this become so popular, and in the case of The Backrooms, it's well deserved. The atmosphere is on point, the little acting we get is solid, and the suspense is very well handled. And even though the film is mostly made in blender, it's very convincing. Good job, Kane Parsons!
